⚡ Just Finished: 200 Amp Service Upgrade in Omaha

This home was running on an outdated service that couldn't keep up with today's demands central air, kitchen appliances, and everything we plug in now.

Here's what we did:

Charging your EV at home shouldn't feel like a gamble. ⚡🚗

Just wrapped up this Level 2 EV charger install for a homeowner here in the Omaha metro. Two things in these photos that most people would never notice, but they're the difference between a safe install and a fire waiting to happen:

🔌 The outlet is an EV-rated NEMA 14-50, not the cheap $12 range plug from the big box store. EV chargers pull heavy current for hours at a time. Standard outlets weren't built for that and they're a known cause of melted plugs.

🛡️ The breaker is a 40-amp GFCI breaker with 5mA personnel protection. That little blue light means it's actively watching for ground faults. It's what current code calls for on EV outlets, and it's what protects your family if something ever goes wrong.

A roofing crew called us from this house because guys were getting shocked on the roof. ⚡

This is the electrical service mast, where the power company's wires connect to the house. Most people assume overhead power lines are way up out of reach. They don't have to be.

Under NEC 230.24, the wires at the house can come down to 10 feet above the ground at the drip loop [230.24(B)(1)]. Over a roof, they only have to be 3 feet above the shingles [230.24(A) Exception 2] — and over the roof overhang, as low as 18 inches [Exception 3]. If you're standing on a roof, that's arm's reach. On this house they were hanging inches off the shingles, and a crew heads-down in tear-off got into them.

Here's why it hurt:
🔴 The insulation was broken off on all three conductors. Bare aluminum on both hots, and the neutral was bare end to end.
🔴 That's 120 volts from any hot to the neutral and 240 volts between the two hots with nothing covering any of it.
🔴 The splice between the utility wires and the house wires sitting at roof level, "weatherproofed" with a plastic grocery bag.

The crew got lucky. A tingle on a roof is a warning. A real shock on a roof is a fall.

The fix: a new, properly sized mast that gets the wires up where they belong, new service conductors, a new weatherhead, and a real attachment point so the connections are made at the mast, not in a bag. We coordinate with the roofers and the utility so it's done while they're working, not after.

No outlet for the garage door opener? This is how you fix it. ⚡

This house never had a ceiling outlet for the garage door opener. For years, the homeowner kept it running on an extension cord draped across the ceiling, which is exactly what extension cords are NOT for. They're temporary. Running a motor on one full-time is a heat and fire risk, and it's a code violation (flexible cords can't substitute for permanent wiring).

So we did it right: a brand-new dedicated circuit from the panel, run in metal conduit along the ceiling to a proper box with a receptacle right where the opener needs it. Clean, secure, and no more cord hanging off the wall.

We also made sure it's GFCI protected at the panel. Every garage outlet, including the one on the ceiling for the opener is required to have GFCI protection. A lot of older homes are missing this, and it's the difference between a tripped breaker and a serious shock.

A few takeaways:
👉 If anything in your house runs on an extension cord permanently, it needs a real outlet.
👉 Garage outlets without GFCI protection are common in older Omaha homes and easy to fix.
👉 A dedicated circuit means the opener isn't sharing power with your fridge, freezer, or shop tools.

A home inspector spotted this during a routine inspection and called us out to take a look. See that wire in the middle? That's melted, charred insulation, the result of a neutral that was never fully tightened at the bar. Over time, a loose connection heats up every time that circuit is under load. It cooks the insulation, builds resistance, and gets a little worse every cycle. Left alone, this is how panel fires start.

And it wasn't just one. When we went through the panel, a lot of the terminations were loose. So we torqued every connection in the panel to spec, cut out the damaged section, and re-terminated it clean.

The homeowner never had a flicker, a tripped breaker, or a warning. That's the scary part. loose connections don't announce themselves until something goes wrong.

⚡ This panel was one bad day from a fire. The owner had no idea.

Swipe to photo 1. That melted black mass is a breaker that fused itself to the bus bar. It didn’t trip. It didn’t smell. It just cooked, quietly, every time that circuit pulled load.
