You might ask, "Hey, Sgt. Ski, why should I hire you when the other guy is faster? That usually means he knows what he's doing... right?" Well, allow me the time to explain.
I've been working on this little gem one of my customers had hiding in the garage for the last 20 years or so... 1968 Volvo P1800S. The last time it ran was in 2014, somewhere around the time he had it painted. It is otherwise completely original.
I put a starter in it first because the old one was no good, but it still wouldn't turn over by the ignition switch. Then I cleaned up the ground connection, that didn't get it. After studying the wiring diagram over the weekend and comparing it with pictures of the wiring situation as I found it (pictures attached), I noticed the two brown wires that were attached to terminal 50 on the starter should actually be attached to terminal 30 with the battery wire. Also, the red/white wire attached to terminal 50 on the starter was attached to terminal 54 on the ignition switch with the white wires attached to 50 where the red/white should be. After I hooked everything up properly, it now turns over by the key.
Turns out whoever worked on it before me had been just hooking up wires whever they felt like it. Probably a guy who doesn't know ohm's law, how to read/understand a wiring diagram, and thinks crimp connectors are acceptable. That type of "mechanic" might get lucky every now and then on trailer wiring; but his crimp connectors will leave you with corroded wires 5 years from now and then he'll tell you to buy a whole new wiring harness and pay him to install it. You tell me... which is faster?
After I got the engine to turn over by the ignition switch it still won't start yet; but once I replace the fuel pump and ignition coil I have a good feeling it will. I'll let you know how it goes in a future post.
