They say sports don't matter in the grand scheme of things. This run said otherwise.

Voted most overrated by your own peers. Then you hit a dagger every single round, carry your team to a Game 7 against the MVP and the best team in the league, come out hitting threes — and go down with an Achilles tear watching your team lose.

No ring. All that work and the ending was still unfair.

That's the rawest lesson in it: life isn't fair, and mental fortitude means coming back from that stronger anyway. Tunnel vision. Keep getting up.

Roof inspection day in Pasadena. Commercial flat roof, 150 people living under it.

No leaks yet, and that's the point — the owner wants it coated before the rains hit at the end of the year, not after. Drainage looks fine, some saggy plywood to handle, and the metal coping gets reused.

If you've got a big flat roof, especially commercial, coating before the rain beats repairing after it every time.

I'll be honest, in the beginning I was a terrible salesperson. Great with older ladies. Terrible with older alpha type men.

Ego was part of it. When you're young and you walk up to an older guy, he's testing you. Act like a smart ass and you're out the door.

What fixed it: open ended questions. Let them think of the idea and the solution on their own. It has to feel like their idea.

Half of sales is identifying who you're talking to in the first 30 seconds and adjusting fast.

Who was harder for you to figure out early on....the testers or the silent ones?

One thing I've learned from years in home improvement sales: if you're a good rep, you don't really need a pitch.

Nobody likes being sold. People want to feel like they won. Charisma, communication, and a clean process do more than any script ever will.

No lead is a bad lead. It all comes down to how good the rep is.
