What a joy it has been to host Giles County youth at the Giles Community Garden's 2024 Kids in the Garden/Kitchen summer program. Today we enjoyed a community walk, playing with worms (thanks Khloe), dental health education, Charlie's famous hotdogs, Laura's delicious banana pudding, and purple berry smoothie popsicles (thanks Gigi). It has been a delight to host such a wonderful group of children and teach them the importance of eating healthy and living well.

Wishing all Giles County youth a fun and exciting 2024-2025 school year!!

We greatly enjoyed having the schoolers from Tender Loving Care at the Giles Community Garden's 2024 Kids in the Garden/Kitchen summer program. Today we enjoyed a community walk, playing with worms (thanks Khloe), dental health education, Charlie's famous "hall of fame hotdogs", and various other activities and treats. It has been a pleasure to host such a great group of children and teach them the importance of eating healthy and living well.

The weather cooperated and we experienced a delightful day both in the garden and in the kitchen. Garden tours, birdhouse gourd painting, vegetable harvesting, musical chairs, and compost education was enjoyed by all participants. Pasta bowls were created, melon taste-testing was introduced, and grape slushies were savored. "Being the Best Version of Yourself" education was provided and unique self-portraits were created. As always, the day concluded with refreshing water activities.

We had a great day with the children at the Giles Community Garden. Due to the rain, the children enjoyed mostly indoor activities: painting birdhouse gourds, balloon dancing, animal motion, and yoga. Good times were enjoyed in the kitchen as pasta bowls were created, melon taste-testing was introduced, and citrus slushies were savored. Education on melons and "My Plate" was facilitated. "Being the Best Version of Yourself" education was provided and unique self-portraits were created.

Due to the rain, yoga at the Giles Community Garden will be canceled for this evening. We hope to see you next week, July 31st @ 6 p.m. for yoga in the garden.

Due to the heat and inclement weather, we will be canceling yoga at the Giles Community Garden this evening, 7/17th. We hope to see everyone next week, 7/24 @ 6 p.m for our scheduled yoga practice.

Another fun day was enjoyed at the Giles Community Garden as children spent time in both the garden and the kitchen. Garden tours were led to allow children the opportunity to identify vegetables as well as a chance to play in the dirt. "Rethink Your Drink" education was provided by Stephanie Spencer, Health Educator with Carilion Clinic. Gigi Robertson, Nutrition Education Facilitator for VT Cooperative Extension, facilitated "My Plate" education and overseen the kitchen activities where taste testings, a nutritious lunch, and delicious fruit smoothies were enjoyed by the group. To end the day, the children enjoyed yoga with Charlie & water activities.

We had another lovely day in the sun at the Giles Community Garden as 19 children spent time in both the garden and the kitchen. Beans were planted, compost was discussed, and garden herbs provided sensory stimulation. "Rev Your Bev" education was presented to the students by Jenny Martin with VFHY. Taste testings, a nutritious lunch, fruit smoothies, and water activities were also enjoyed by all participants.

We had a lovely day in the sun at the Giles Community Garden as the children dug potatoes, planted seeds, watered plants, and played in the dirt. "My Plate" education was shared by Laura Reasor, VA Cooperative Extension Agent, and Stephanie Spencer, Carilion Clinic Health Educator, provided "Dog Bite Prevention" education to the participants. Taste testings, a nutritious lunch, apple slushies, and water activities were also enjoyed by all participants.
