There’s something really rewarding about walking through a project after months and months of planning and finally seeing everything start to come together.

Projects like this are such a collaborative process, between the homeowners, architect, everyone involved in the design, and all of the people actually building it. So many decisions and conversations happen along the way before you ever get to see the finished result.

This one has been especially fun to be a part of. We have clients who aren’t afraid of ALL the fun tile, are willing to take some risks, and have trusted us along the way. It’s been really fun watching all of those ideas slowly turn into an actual home. There are still so many fun spaces, materials and details to come on this one!

Only about a year late posting the finished photos of this one 😅

We finished out this side of the basement to create a dedicated laundry area, bathroom, and additional finished space for storage and everyday use.

With low ceilings and plenty of existing plumbing, ductwork and mechanicals to work around, we kept the exposed ceiling and painted it dark, then enclosed the mechanical space to clean up the visual clutter. We added plenty of cabinetry and counter space in the laundry area, including a utility sink and space for folding, and brought in some interest with the geometric accent tile.

A much more functional, finished space, and definitely a better place to do laundry.

On our current project, the homeowners wanted site-finished red oak hardwood throughout, with a herringbone accent in the dining room. The problem was finding it.

After checking with several suppliers, we were either told they didn’t offer unfinished herringbone, only had prefinished options, or the cost was 3-4x that of standard red oak. We even checked into having the pieces custom cut for us without much luck.

Rather than sending our clients a crazy price for it, or just telling them it couldn’t be done, we decided to make it ourselves.

We’re using the same standard nested bundles of red oak going throughout the rest of the house and cutting the herringbone pieces on site. Jon walks through some of the setup and prep involved in getting everything ready for install.

This allowed us to stick with our usual suppliers and a red oak we already know and trust, while keeping the material cost much more reasonable for our clients and still giving them the custom detail they wanted.

And honestly, this is the kind of stuff we love. When the straightforward option doesn’t exist, we’re not afraid to figure out another way to get there.

I took this video as I had just finished up some final touches and before final cleaning, but I think it’s a good quick general overview of the nice tile details we put in. In the end these types of designs and details tend to look effortless but there is a lot of time and effort spent planning, calculating, and installing to achieve these results. Well worth it considering this shower may be here for the next 50 years or more. -Jon

With a more minimal kitchen design, the challenge is making the space feel clean and calm without ignoring how it will actually be used every day.

We decided to add these appliance garages with pocket doors on either side of the range to help hide countertop clutter and cut down on visual noise. We finished the interiors to match the outer cabinet faces, and planned each shelf and outlet location based on what would actually live inside.

Do we close the doors on this high-use cabinet every time we use the toaster or microwave? No, maybe a few times a week. But when we want the option, it’s as simple as closing the doors. No unplugging appliances and moving them to another cabinet or pantry nearby. Everything stays exactly where it’s at, ready to go.

I’m not ashamed to admit that for a long time our tile to ceiling transitions were one of those things that we always felt could use some improvement. We would put so much effort into making the install itself near flawless just to have our tape pull tiny portions of the paint off the ceiling when trying to get a perfect grout caulk line.

I’m happy to say we now have a near perfect process for getting this line clean so that when our clients look up at this transition during their shower thoughts, they can continue drifting away into whatever epiphanies they are having without getting distracted by an imperfect caulk line.

We feel clean caulk in combination with our obsession with tile layout, often culminating in full tiles at the ceiling, really takes our installs from good to great.

For our custom white oak cabinets on our model home build we used Blum Movento Tip-On Push Button drawer slides for the drawers. The action on these drawers is truly incredible - with just the lightest touch you get this satisfying opening action even with drawers heavily weighted with large pots and pans. The synchronization rods that you see running across the cabinet from one slide to the other ensure that even tapping on the far left or right sides cause the push buttons to engage on both drawer slides simultaneously so that the drawers maintain this perfect opening function regardless of where you push on the front. It’s so cool when something actually very complex disappears into something so simple and satisfying.

We recently completed this hardwood flooring install as part of our current kitchen remodel. After removing the old linoleum, we installed new 2¼” red oak to match the existing hardwood in the adjoining living room.

Rather than installing a straight transition between the two spaces, we carefully laced the new flooring into the old, so there really isn’t a transition at all.

To finish it off, we sanded and refinished both the existing and new flooring, so it all blends together seamlessly. You’d never guess it was installed decades apart.

I feel like quartzite is the new granite, but the slabs have gotten even prettier!

This particular stone is Nera Quartzite with a leathered finish. Quartzite gives you the durability, scratch resistance, heat resistance, and low-maintenance appeal people have always loved about granite, but with more options when it comes to veining and movement that you might find in other natural stones like marble.

The leathered finish gives a softer, more natural and organic feel to the space, and also hides fingerprints and everyday smudges a little better than polished.

Being a natural stone, it does require sealing from time to time, but if you ask me, that’s a fair trade off for all this character.
