Not every part of building a custom home happens on the jobsite.

A significant amount of time is spent refining floor plans, working through design ideas, and preparing detailed pricing before construction ever begins.

These renderings are from a custom home I've been working on recently. It's been rewarding to take an initial concept and, through many conversations, inspiration photos, and revisions, help shape it into a home that reflects the homeowners' vision.

One of my favorite parts of this process is watching ideas on paper become something you can truly begin to picture.

I'm excited to share a look at what we've been working on behind the scenes.

Why We Build It This Way: High-Temperature Ice & Water Shield

Some of the most important decisions in a custom home are the ones you'll never see once construction is complete.

This home features standing seam metal roofing over the covered porches and accent roof areas. While standard ice and water shield is commonly used beneath asphalt shingles, metal roofing requires a different approach beneath the finished roof surface.

For this project, we used Grace Ice & Water Shield HT from GCP because it is specifically designed for the higher temperatures associated with metal roofing systems and helps provide long-term protection and performance.

It's a detail that will be hidden once the finished roof is installed, but understanding and following manufacturer recommendations is an important part of building homes designed to last.

Because great construction isn't just about what you can see—it's also about what you can't.

One of the most exciting milestones in the custom home building process is when a house begins to take on its own character.

With the installation of the roof and windows now complete, this project is transitioning from framing and structural systems to the first major homeowner selections that define the look and feel of the home.

For this home, the homeowners selected black Andersen Windows + Doors 400 Series windows paired with Owens Corning Roofing Duration shingles in Black Sable—combining timeless design, durability, and long-term performance.

While many of the most important elements of a home remain hidden behind the walls, these exterior selections are the first glimpse of the vision coming to life.

As a custom home builder, one of our favorite parts of the process is guiding homeowners through these decisions and helping them create a home that reflects their style, priorities, and the way they want to live.

This video starts with the last of the roof trusses being set over the gym area, then moves into roof sheathing and a few drone views showing the home fully taking shape.

Most of this roof was stick-built, but the gym area used trusses due to the size and structure of that space. It’s always exciting when a home reaches this stage because the overall form starts to feel real — rooflines, volume, scale, and the layout all begin coming together.

This one is starting to take shape.

We’ve been continuing to refine the exterior — working through siding, stone, and overall material direction — while getting framing underway on site.

The first image reflects where things are currently headed. The rest shows progress from the past week as the structure starts to come together.

It’s always a different perspective once you can walk it and see how everything actually lays out in real space.

Framing started this week with the first floor system going in.

This stage is all about structure—setting beams and floor joists that will support everything above. It may not look like much yet, but this is where the house really begins to come together.

Over the next few weeks, things will move quickly from this to full walls and roof.
