This is a prime example of why you should have your gas furnace checked once a yr. It is very common for a salesman to up sell a high efficiency unit to a customer who's house isn't rated for a 90+ unit. It's very common they over or under size the equipment and use the wrong sized duct. It's very common to have the wrong tonnage unit installed when it checks out math wise, but didnt take into consideration old windows or lack of installation. What im getting at, is most units are not junk. It comes down to the installer and the maintenance the customers care to put into the equipment.
In this video, the flame rollout sensors did not shut this down like they should have. The heat exchanger tube's ( where you see the flames ) rotted out. Either excess humidity/condensate leak from ac, but most likely an undersized return. These people were living like this for God knows how long. They were living with constant headaches and sick all the time from the carbon monoxide mixing with their breathing air.
Anytime you have a gas/propane/oil - forced hot air ( hvac ) it is absolutely imperative to have up to date carbon monoxide detectors in each bed room. Most people think where the unit is would be the most important place. The most important place is your bedroom. If you're a tenant, have your landlord pick you up a new one and leave it next to your bed. It could save your life. Having the unit checked and cleaned once a year will also keep the chances of anything like this happening much lower!
