Hidden Dangers: Why Choosing the Right Tree Care Company Matters

​I recently looked at this tree for a potential client. He mentioned that two different "arborists" had previously told him the tree was "fine" and just needed to be elevated (cutting off the lower limbs).

​​At Black's 215-4MY-TREE, we don't just look at branches; we look at the whole picture. Based on our structural risk assessment, we couldn't in good conscience recommend elevating this tree, and we strongly advised the homeowner against it:

​1️⃣ The Leverage Effect: This tree already has a natural lean on a hillside. If we cut away the lower limbs, we shift the tree's center of gravity higher up. This creates a giant "lever arm." When high winds hit that top-heavy canopy, puts massive torque on the base, significantly increasing the risk of the tree uprooting.

​2️⃣ The Roots Tell a Story: Look at the second photo. Those roots protruding out the backside are tension roots. They are working overtime, acting like anchor cables to pull back against the weight of the lean.

​Elevating this tree might make it look open in the short term, but it creates a massive structural hazard right next to a driveway and sidewalk.

Just another quiet day in the office...

​We brought out the crane to take down some massive, extremely dead trees. Dead trees are always a bit unpredictable, but on this day removals came with a few extra surprises!

​While pulling over one of the trees in a rocky, wooded area, we ran into a massive 6-foot snake. By the time I went to grab my phone, he vanished. Next, three flying squirrels decided to defend their turf and started chasing us around the dead tree we were working on! The moment I got my camera ready, they launched into a neighboring tree and disappeared down a hole. I guess no matter how incredibly brave they are, when you're not feeling photo ready, you may be a little camera shy.

​The only coworker who didn’t mind a photo op was a raccoon supervising us from above. In the one photo, if you look closely at the split in the tree, you may be able to see him peeking out to make sure we were doing the job right.

​⚠️ Disclaimer: No animals were harmed during this job. The only thing hurt today was our egos as a crew of grown men got chased around a tree by 5-inch flying squirrels.
