SMP was recently welcomed into the Community Design Collaborative's Volunteer Hall of Fame, a distinction for firms that have dedicated over 1500 pro bono hours to community design. Thanks to the Collaborative for the honor and for continuing to strengthen Philly's neighborhoods through design!

Our team took a visit to the Houston Market construction site, which is slated to finish up and start serving food in just a few weeks. SMP led a large multidisciplinary design team for the re-conceptualization and renovation of the space. Located in the lower level of Houston Hall at the University of Pennsylvania, the market sits within the oldest student union building in the nation. Key project goals were to diversify food offerings, allow each food platform to function independently, and extend operating hours for the market and its seating spaces.

Located Just down the road from the Park Office and Environmental Learning Center currently under construction at Bald Eagle State Park, another SMP project – The Nature Inn – was designed to connect guests with the outdoors and convey a message of conservation and stewardship. Overlooking a spectacular reservoir, this LEED Gold project offers amenities to visitors wanting to experience the park that are not offered by traditional campgrounds and cabins. The project was named the Best Eco-Friendly Hotel in the nation by USA TODAY.

Construction is progressing on the Bald Eagle State Park Office and Environmental Learning Center. This SMP-designed renovation and expansion will increase park operations and accommodate outreach to the public. Features include an improved education room, offices, and outdoor space. The building design responds to the natural beauty of the park and reflects the architectural character of recent park construction.

Over a lunchtime charrette, the SMP team brainstormed ideas for a new project at The Hill School in Pottstown, which is composed of a renovation of two historic campus structures connected by a dynamic new building showcasing state-of-the-art laboratories. More details about this project to come!

Site work has begun on the Center for STEM Education at the Academy of Notre Dame de Namur. Current work includes basement excavation, installation of storm structures, and relocation of existing sanitary lines. Underground utility work and excavation of footings is soon to follow. Stay tuned for more as construction moves ahead!

Though winter is now upon us, students at the recently completed Lions Gate Apartments at Penn State Abington were able to take advantage of the site amenities this fall. In addition to having areas to sit and relax or do work, there is dedicated bicycle storage and a public bike-share and car-share program, as well as a stop for the University shuttle system.

Construction at Poe Valley State Park is progressing steadily. The SMP-designed new park office building will provide for visitor contact and park administration, and will be visible as you enter from the existing drive. Many elements of the building, such as the exposed wood trusses, have been sustainably harvested from Pennsylvania’s forests.

On August 23rd, Penn State Abington celebrated the ribbon cutting of “Lions Gate”, the first residence hall for the Abington campus. Located at 1001 Old York Road, Lions Gate is a state-of-the-art, 400-student apartment style center for student living and learning.
