Every now and again a cutoff will have some figure that leads me to hold on to it, frustratingly taking up space in my shop until the right design pops into my head. I had a wildly figured piece of 8/4 cherry that I just knew would reveal an interesting panel when cut open and book matched.
The result was absolutely beautiful and definitely interesting.
This was a practice project, not a commission, so I decided to run with it. I got to play with a few new techniques, mitred dovetail edges, inlay face frame, brushing mixed shellac.
The result is a unique, bold, beautiful specialty cabinet that I decided to give away to some friends that would embrace the design and show it proudly. It turns out that this is their first piece of handmade furniture so I know it'll be well loved.
