May is Electrical Safety month! Here's a commonly asked safety question.
Did a home inspector tell you that your home contains k**b and tube wiring, and you're wondering if it's safe? Is your insurance agent asking about k**b and tube wiring in your home and indicating that it might prevent you from getting insurance? These questions come up a lot. In fact, just today, a realtor emailed me with a question about these issues.
Here is my answer: K**b and tube wiring can be found functioning properly all around the city. However, problems can arise from normal aging, improperly installed insulation, any work done to the electrical system that leaves it compromised, and more. A careful inspection by a reputable professional must be performed to assess the health of your k**b and tube wiring (or of any of your home's systems and structures).
Now, to the insurance issue. Because each company has its own standards, I would refer you back to your agent for information that is specific to your situation.
I hope this helps!
Please remember to be safe and call an electrical professional for your electrical needs!
Thank you!
