Friends of Paolone Park

Friends of Paolone Park We are the best block in South Philly! After a fire destroyed the four homes in the early 1970s, the City of Philadelphia razed the area. Paolone Sr. Paolone, Sr.

History of Paolone Park
There were once houses on the site that is now Paolone Park, on a strip of land in the middle of the 700 block of Sears and Medina Streets. The empty lots were then used as a parking lot, In the early 80s, residents got together and decided to make this area a green space. They cleaned up trash and debris, planted grass and built and filled planters. The City assisted by bu

ilding brick pathways and planting trees. When these trees failed to thrive, the neighbors got together and bought and planted trees that they preferred, including Magnolia, Weeping Cherry, Crab Apple, and Pine. In 1989 residents honored well-loved, longtime Democratic Committeeman Louis P. by naming the park after him. There is a plaque at the head of the park which explains that Louis P. Memorial Park is dedicated to this senior Democratic Committeeman, 1st Ward, 10th Division, “whose commitment was to the improvement of the quality of life for his fellow man and the betterment of his community.”

A dedicated group of neighbors continues to work to improve this green oasis hidden away in the heart of South Philadelphia by maintaining the landscaping, planting and tending grass, adding plantings as needed, pruning trees, and participating in regularly scheduled clean up days. The residents of Sears and Medina Streets are proud of their efforts in Paolone Park to improve the quality of life for block residents as well as all those in the surrounding neighborhood.
