When alkalinity is too low, the pH can bounce around and the water may become corrosive. When it is too high, the pH can be difficult to control and the water may become cloudy or lead to scale buildup.

For most pools, total alkalinity should generally stay between 80 and 120 ppm.

Keeping alkalinity balanced helps protect your pool surface, equipment, and sanitizer performance.
