Nature never gets old. 🪲🌳

Came across some really cool ambrosia beetle activity on this tree stump.

What you’re seeing here are the little frass “toothpicks” the beetles push out of their galleries as they bore into the wood. When you see a bunch of them like this, it can almost look like the tree is growing tiny worms.

Ambrosia beetles have a pretty incredible relationship with fungi. They carry specific fungi into the wood, cultivate it inside their galleries, and then feed on that fungus. So in a way, these tiny beetles are actually farming underground inside the tree.

The little tubes sticking out of the wood are one of those signs you can easily walk right past if you’re not paying attention.

I’ve worked around insects for years, and this is still one of the things I enjoy most about being outside — there’s always something interesting going on if you take the time to look.

Nature is pretty amazing. 🌳🪲

🐛 Check out these hornworms!

I ran across these two today and thought they were too cool not to share.

These are to***co hornworms, and they are some BIG caterpillars. The first thing you notice is that big red horn on the back, but don’t let it fool you — that horn won’t hurt you. It’s not a stinger.

These guys can get around 4 inches long, and they’re some of the biggest caterpillars you’ll come across here in Indiana.

They spend their time eating plants, especially things in the tomato and pepper family. If you’ve ever found one on your tomato plants, you know they can eat a LOT in a short amount of time.

Eventually, they leave the plant, go down into the soil, and pupate. Then they come back out as a sphinx moth.

I always enjoy finding stuff like this while I’m out working. There’s a whole lot of interesting stuff living right around us that most people probably walk right past without ever noticing.

Nature is pretty amazing when you stop and take a closer look. 🌿🐛

🐛 DON’T LET THIS LITTLE GUY FOOL YOU!

Came across this saddleback caterpillar today, and while it looks pretty cool, this is one caterpillar you don’t want to pick up!

That bright green body and brown “saddle” make it easy to recognize. Those little hairs and spines can deliver a nasty sting if you brush against them. 😬

They’re not a pest we normally need to worry about controlling, and they’re actually a pretty interesting part of our local ecosystem. But if you see one, look—but don’t touch!

Nature is full of some pretty amazing creatures… and a few that come with their own built-in warning label. 😂

Tuesday Termite Tip

Did you know?

One of the biggest things that attracts termites isn’t the wood…

It’s moisture. 💧

Leaky gutters, dripping outdoor faucets, poor drainage, and wood staying damp near your foundation create ideal conditions for termites.

A few simple things can help protect your home:
✔️ Keep gutters clean and flowing.
✔️ Repair water leaks promptly.
✔️ Keep mulch and firewood away from your foundation.
✔️ Make sure water drains away from your home after a rain.

A few minutes of maintenance today can help prevent a costly repair tomorrow.

At Tom’s Termite & Pest Control, we’re here to provide honest inspections and dependable service, and straightforward advice from your local pest pros.

“The Little Things”

Sometimes protecting your home isn’t about something dramatic.

It’s noticing the little things.

A line of ants that wasn’t there yesterday.

A wasp starting to build under the eaves.

A few winged insects around the windows.

A small mud tube along the foundation.

Those little signs can become big problems if they’re ignored.

At Tom’s Termite & Pest Control, we believe in catching problems early, giving honest advice, and treating every home like it belongs to our own family.

We don’t believe in scare tactics—we believe in helping our neighbors make informed decisions.

Thank you to everyone who supports local businesses like ours. Every recommendation, every referral, and every kind word helps us continue serving the communities we love.

Have a great day, Southern Indiana—and stay cool out there! ☀️
