⚡ THINKING ABOUT UPGRADING YOUR ELECTRICAL PANEL? READ THIS FIRST! ⚡
🏠 Underground electrical services require special attention!
If your home has an underground electrical service, upgrading from a 100-amp panel to a 200-amp panel may not be as simple as replacing the panel itself.
🔎 Why? The existing underground feeder or service conductors may not be properly sized for the increased electrical load or new service rating.
If the existing wires are undersized, they may need to be replaced before the upgrade can be completed safely and in compliance with applicable code requirements.
⚠️ Before upgrading, a licensed electrician should evaluate:
✅ Existing conductor size and ampacity
✅ Underground conduit and wiring conditions
✅ Available service capacity
✅ Utility requirements and local permitting requirements
📘 2023 NEC references:
• Article 310 – Conductors for General Wiring (including conductor ampacity and sizing).
• Article 230 – Services, including applicable service-conductor requirements.
• Article 300.5 – Underground Installations.
These requirements help ensure conductors are suitable and properly sized for the installation. The exact requirements depend on the service configuration and applicable code provisions.
💡 The bottom line: Before investing in a panel upgrade, have your underground service evaluated. Replacing the panel alone does not automatically increase the capacity of the existing wiring.
