This is equal parts sad and inspiring. The attacks of September 11, 2001 on the World Trade Center tore a hole in the country’s heart. The process of rebuilding the site and the memorial to those lost reminds us that we are resilient, and that there is always light – even in our darkest times.
We spent more than a decade – from recovery to rebuilding – at the WTC – and it will always hold a special place in our history – and our hearts.

coming to you compliments of our Plant Superintendent Mike Johnson!
Last year, we launched an all-company, sustained wellness challenge and Mike was just crowned our winner!
He lost a whopping 18.12% of his total body weight! Mike also gained a few things, including bragging rights, a new lease on life and $2,500, which he plans to use to travel to Alaska or Hawaii.

We couldn’t be happier for Mike – and a big shout out to all of our employees who committed to their health and wellness and made healthy changes!

Keep up the good work, everyone!

Dear Wednesday: you bridge the gap between Monday and Friday – and for that, we thank you!

Speaking of bridges, here is a high-flying view of our bridge repair work for US68 in Kentucky, where we are installing micropiles and soil nail SOE walls to support the bridge’s overall rehabilitation.

We’re loving that pop of Nicholson Red in the Bluegrass State, ya’ll!

is a big Thank You to our Corporate Receptionist Becky Zahn and her assistant, Wilson!
Becky has kept the ship sailing through both the calm and the surging seas - all with a smile on her face (even when it's under a mask!)

Keep smiling and thanks "Rebecky!"

takes us to some heavenly views of the project of a lifetime in Provo, Utah!
When a fire damaged the Provo City Center Tabernacle in 2010, the only thing left of the beloved structure was the brick facade and the rubble foundation.

The facade was immediately braced to prepare it for the reconstruction efforts, which would turn it into the Provo Temple.

We were tasked with developing and constructing an elaborate underpinning system so that two levels of basement could be built beneath the structure during the rebuilding process. Our work also included constructing a support of excavation system around the entire complex and a groundwater cutoff wall and dewatering system around the new Temple.

Our crew worked through some extreme conditions to get this project done on time and on budget – including sub-zero temperatures, high winds and frozen grounds. They also worked under the watchful eye of the public – who were fascinated with what appeared to be our ability to “life the Temple to the heavens on our stilts.”

Considered a feat of modern engineering – and a little bit of a miracle – the Provo project was one for the ages.

Some projects are out of this world - and some are under it!

finds us in the Cheese State!

A private client in Verona, Wisconsin wanted to build an 11,400-seat auditorium entirely underground to preserve the scenic views of the rest of their campus.

But there was a tiny problem: two main structural support columns located in the entry way of the auditorium interrupted its open, panoramic views.

Enter Nicholson! We installed twelve 200-ton compression and twelve 100-ton tension low-mobility grouted micropiles to support cantilevered trusses needed to replace the two main structural support columns in question, keeping the open concept unobstructed.

The auditorium construction was 75% complete at the time, but that was no problem for our team! We cored holes through 48 inches of reinforced mat foundation required for installation of the low mobility grouted micropiles. Because the underlying rock was karstic, low mobility grouted micropiles were installed to both fill interconnected cavities in the rock and provide structural support of the foundation.

There many chapters to this story in scenic Verona - and more visits to the await us this anniversary year!

So much to share in this edition of !
This awesome shot comes to us from Superintendent Kirk Stecik and Project Manager Eric Blue at their job in Boyers, Pennsylvania where we’re drilling rock bolts for a private mining client and General Contractor Salmon Construction.
Our drilling operation needed to reach 40-feet above the drill bench, so we used a TEI Drill mounted on a Case 350 Excavator to make it happen.

Up high, down low - underwater - and everywhere in between - we always find a way!
Also, can we get a shout for our operators? WOW!

Heading West on this week's !
Today we head to Boulder, Colorado - the home of the University of Colorado.

Nicholson constructed 75,000 square feet of both temporary and permanent earth retention as support of excavation for the Athletic Department’s new, state-of-the-art football training center. The majority of the earth retention work was focused on the new full-size indoor football practice field, which also included two-levels of below-grade parking.

Throughout the project, we worked in close coordination with the design team to continually adjust, re-design, and construct the earth retention systems as the project scope progressed. The support of excavation was completed utilizing soil nail and shotcrete walls, cantilevered soldier beam and wood lagging walls, as well as drilled shaft secant walls with shotcrete.

We were awarded this work thanks to our extensive SOE experience - and our team's ability to quickly respond to our client's needs.

You might say we have "special teams." Get it? Special teams? Football? Anyone remember sports?
