Do you prefer inset doors or overlay doors?

The details make all the difference!

Our master cabinetmaker, Nick Herrick, is installing the doors on one of the base cabinets for our latest project in Dublin, Ohio.

This living room features over 20 feet of custom cabinetry along one wall, but only two of the cabinets have doors. And those doors? Beautiful inset doors with visible hinges chosen by the client.

Here’s where craftsmanship really matters. Visible hinges on inset doors don’t offer much room for adjustment, so getting the fit right from the start is essential. Every gap, every alignment, and every detail has to be just right.

That’s the beauty of true custom cabinetry. It’s not just about building cabinets to fit a space. It’s about the skill, precision, and attention to detail that go into making every piece exceptional.

What details do you appreciate most in custom cabinetry? Let us know in the comments!

Your home wasn’t built around a cabinet manufacturer’s standard sizes—and your lifestyle probably wasn’t either.

That’s one of the biggest advantages of working with a custom cabinetmaker.

Instead of asking, “What can we fit into this space?”, custom cabinetry lets you ask, “What would work best in this space?”

That difference can completely change the way a room functions.

So the next time you think about custom cabinetry, don’t stop at the kitchen.

Look around your home.

That empty wall in the living room.
The awkward corner in the home office.
The cluttered mudroom.
The underused dining room.
The fireplace that could become a true focal point.

Those spaces may be opportunities for something more than storage.

They may be opportunities for custom cabinetry designed specifically for the way you live.

And that’s where custom cabinetry can truly transform a home.

The 20’ of bookcase cabinets are almost finished for this home in Dublin, Ohio. All that’s left is the base molding.

The details matter. And quality craftsmanship takes time, skill, and a commitment to getting things right.

This photo is from 2022, when we were working on a small custom cabinet. Take a look at that miter! Perfectly fitted, with no gaps to fill and no visible nail holes to show through the finish.

It might seem like a small thing, but it's exactly this kind of attention to detail that sets Herrick's Custom Furniture and Cabinets, Inc. apart. We believe the quality of our work should shine through in every corner, joint, and finish.

When it comes to custom cabinetry, do you appreciate the little details as much as we do? Let us know in the comments!

Corners can be a challenge. Do you prefer a lazy susan or corner shelves?

The finishing touches make all the difference!

Our master cabinetmaker, Nick Herrick, is fitting the crown molding on more than 20 feet of custom bookcase cabinets for a client in Dublin, Ohio.

With cabinet depths ranging from 12" to 25", the crown molding has to flow seamlessly through every change in depth, tying the entire wall of cabinetry together. That means careful planning, precise measurements, and a whole lot of attention to detail.

It's these little details that turn a beautiful set of cabinets into a truly custom piece of craftsmanship.

The biggest misconception about custom cabinetry is that custom simply means choosing a cabinet from a catalog and ordering it in a particular size.

There is a difference between something being ordered specifically for your home and something being designed specifically for your home.

True custom cabinetry starts with the space and the homeowner.

The cabinetmaker considers the room’s dimensions, architectural features, how the space will be used, what needs to be stored, and the design aesthetic you’re trying to achieve.

From there, the cabinetry can be designed and built around those requirements.

That might mean creating a cabinet to fit an unusual wall, incorporating a hidden storage area, matching existing cabinetry, selecting a particular wood species, or designing a piece of furniture that simply isn’t available anywhere else.

It feels like a lifetime ago that we built this custom podium for a presidential campaign!

The campaign sent us the specifications, including the exact dimensions, stain colors, and even the number and placement of holes needed for microphones.

From the details they provided, we turned their specifications into a one-of-a-kind piece built specifically for their needs.

It’s projects like this that remind us why we love custom woodworking. No two projects are exactly alike!
