One thing that always makes us scratch our heads is when we hear a fence company tell a homeowner, “We can start tomorrow.”
Our first thought is:
“Have the utility lines been marked yet?”
Before anyone starts digging post holes, an 811 utility locate should be requested so public underground utility lines can be marked. In most areas, that process takes 2–4 business days.
Most homeowners don’t think about what’s buried underground until something gets hit. A damaged utility line can mean costly repairs, interrupted service, or, in some cases, a serious safety hazard.
We know there are situations where utilities have already been marked or digging isn’t required. But if a project involves digging for new fence posts, asking about 811 is one of the simplest ways to protect your property.
It’s a small question that can prevent a very big problem.
