🐟 IF YOUR KOI COULD TALK…
“Our pond is our entire world. Help us make it a healthy one!”
From the surface, a pond might look beautiful—but what is life like beneath the water?
Here’s what your koi would want you to know:👇🦈
💧 “Clear water isn’t always safe. Please test it!”
You can’t judge water quality by appearance alone. Ammonia and nitrite can harm us even when the water looks crystal clear. Regularly check ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, and KH—the buffering capacity that helps keep pH stable.
Good filtration, regular maintenance, and appropriate water changes help keep our home healthy.
🫧 “We need oxygen—keep aeration flowing!”
We breathe oxygen dissolved in the water. Aeration and circulation help replenish it and support the beneficial bacteria in your biological filter. Warm water holds less oxygen, so pay extra attention during hot weather. A pretty waterfall doesn’t automatically mean we have enough!
🌊 “Give us room to grow and swim!”
We may arrive small, but we won’t stay that way! Plan for our adult size and your pond’s filtration capacity. Overcrowding increases waste and competition for oxygen. We also appreciate suitable depth, some shade, and protection from predators.
🍽️ “Feed quality food, without overfeeding!”
Our enthusiastic appetites don’t mean we need another handful! Feed a quality koi diet in portions we can finish promptly, adjusting to water temperature and activity. Uneaten food and excess waste put more pressure on water quality and filtration.
👀 “Watch us—we communicate through our behavior!”
Changes in swimming, appetite, breathing, or how we interact can signal a problem. Gasping at the surface, repeatedly rubbing against objects, or becoming unusually withdrawn deserve prompt attention.
A healthy pond takes consistent care. Every water test, filter check, and thoughtful feeding helps us thrive. 🧡
