Just came across this photo of a little trick I thought of one day of the job. I cracked open a fresh can of red-lead substitute primer to paint out the inside face of a plank. When I noticed it hadn’t been stirred I thought, “really wish I didn’t have to mix this by hand right now!” But then I looked at the paint key in my hand and thought, “wait a minute. What if I…” The picture says the rest!

This is Mr. Snuffleupagus (responds well to Snuffy). He is my favorite 3 lb sledge hammer. Picture #3 shows Snuffy’s former 6” hex-shaped handle. I decided a while back to upgrade him to a 12” black locust handle with two grip positions and a purple heart wedge. This was a good opportunity to make this sledge more user friendly and to use my spokeshave on the shave horse. Last image shows Snuffy hard at work demoing rotten planking out of a 100 year old Lake Union motor vessel. More on that boat/job in a post coming soon…

Had a brass fastener break on me as I was installing teak trim around the new port light. I missed oversizing one of the holes in the acrylic and the #8 screw bound up quick and snapped. I used one of these handy little hollow, reverse drive screw extractors to get that little bu**er out. I also employed a little trick I just learned from to secure my alignment jig. I didn’t have any double stick tape with me on the boat, but I did have painter’s tape and CA super glue w/ accelerator. Worked great! Thanks for sharing Keith! Go check out his video post for a quick tutorial on this technique.

I was scrolling through old photos and came across this fun job I never got around to sharing. I got to finish off these kite winder stairs with , who originally built them and designed all the finish details. These stairs are bright, cvg fir treads, newel post, balusters and rails, with bamboo risers to compliment the flooring. Jeff also designed the underside storage area with a drawer bank, and a new home for his sweet little dog, Cleo, which I helped build! He made an awesome skirt to run along the stringer, but unfortunately I don’t have a picture of that to showcase.

A little side job for . Their fire extinguisher cases were accidentally installed a little to close to the floors, so they came up with this creative little idea to swap them out for some small inset shelves. I designed them to look like little window boxes with captured adjustable shelves, poplar casing, stools, & aprons.

I made this half model of “the sixteen”, which is more or less the Haven 12 1/2, while attending boat school ; one of the best decisions of my professional life! It’s a great exercise to work through while training to work as a shipwright, boatbuilder, or carpenters in the trades. Made up from waterline lifts pulled from a scaled-draft’s plan view, half models serve a great purpose in visualizing the lines of a hull in real life before making the full size vessel. I had fun finishing this half hull off a little more than is typical, by adding some top side paint, bright bottom, and a brass stem band. If you ever think you need a change of pace in life, go to boat school at NWSWB and you’ll simply be a happier person!

Digging through that archives, I came across this shot of the biggest slab I’ve ever seen in person. I think it was black walnut, fated for a future as a conference table for some big company. The exec’s better be ready to give those doughnuts a hard push to slide the box up to the CEO.

Ellie K. needed a propane locker and some vents and through hulls sealed up. This is a custom 38’ Sam Devlin design motorboat. 16 years old and one of the best kept boats I’ve ever worked on. Did some layout of the hole to cut in the deck. Then put some coamings in the hole and built a hatch to seal the propane locker. On the interior of the aft cabin, I built up some fiberglass bulkheads and bonded them on to ensure no gas leaks could enter the living space. It was a fun job for a nice client and the first job where I couldn’t find any rot! Sounds like she’ll be back later this fall for a custom flybridge! As always, it was great knocking this job out with

It's been a minute (or 1 year and two months) since I last threw something up on the interwebs. It's not that I've been doing nothing, but rather I wanted to take a break from the social media realm. It's my hope that this post will kick off a series of subsequent posts on my work over the past year+ with current projects updates peppered in between and then try to keep the ball rolling. Cheers!

I'll start with the boat, Cabezon, I just finished working on with . It's the same boat from my last post in 2021 where we re-built the bulwarks on this Grand Banks. We also did a new transom and some planking in 2020 (see earlier post). Here the boat was on the hard for us to re-plank some rotten strakes.
