Few buildings in Newport embody the city's history as completely as the Wanton-Lyman-Hazard House. Built around 1697, it is one of Newport's oldest surviving homes and has stood witness to more than three centuries of Rhode Island history. Over the years, the house has been associated with colonial governors, Revolutionary-era figures, and generations of Newport families. It even weathered the political unrest of the Stamp Act era, when Loyalist owner Martin Howard Jr. became a target of the 1765 riots.

The house also serves as an important reminder of Newport's complex history. Research conducted at the property has helped illuminate the lives of enslaved Africans who once lived and worked there, making the site an important landmark for both architectural and cultural preservation.

Slate & Copper Services was honored to contribute to the restoration of this extraordinary property alongside Damon Co. and Kirby Perkins Construction. Projects of this significance require more than technical expertise. They demand thoughtful collaboration, respect for historic materials and methods, and a commitment to preserving the integrity of the structure for future generations.

Twenty‑five years ago, our nation changed forever.
In the weeks that followed, craftsmen across the country found ways to express grief, resilience, and unity through their work.

One of those tributes still stands quietly today — a handcrafted rendering of Old Glory, created in late September 2001. The red stripes, symbolizing Hardiness & Valor, are Western Red Cedar. The white stripes, Purity & Innocence, and the stars for our fifty states are Alaskan Yellow Cypress. The blue canton, representing Vigilance, Perseverance & Justice, is a weathered Red Cedar — aged but enduring.

This piece reminds us that even in tragedy, there is strength in creation.
We remember those we lost, honor those who responded, and reflect on the enduring spirit that binds us all.
