As we approach next week, we'll not only be honoring Memorial Day but also commemorating our first year of operations! We're thankful to our valued customers for their unwavering support throughout the year.

We've encountered ups and downs, savoring victories and learning from setbacks, but we're proud of our strong finish. We'll keep building on this momentum, learning, and growing.

With colder weather here and even lower temperatures on the way, many homeowners notice their heat pump doing things that seem unusual. One of those is defrost mode, and understanding it can help you know what’s normal and what’s not. ☃️

❄️ What Happens During Heat Pump Defrost Mode? ❄️

During cold weather, ice can form on the outdoor coil of a heat pump. Defrost mode is designed to safely remove that ice so the system can operate efficiently.

🔄 What Happens During Defrost

1️⃣ Ice Detection – Scensor detects frost on the outdoor coil, which acts as insulation and reduces heat transfer.
2️⃣ Reversal – The system temporarily switches from heating to a cooling-like mode by reversing refrigerant flow.
3️⃣ Hot Gas to Coil – Hot refrigerant flows to the outdoor coil to melt the ice.
4️⃣ Outdoor Fan Stops – The fan usually shuts off so the heat can work more effectively on the coil.
5️⃣ Indoor Heat Engages (Often) – Auxiliary or backup heat turns on to prevent cold air from blowing into your home.
6️⃣ Cycle Ends – Once the ice is cleared (typically 5–10 minutes) or a timer runs out, the system returns to normal heating.

✅ Normal Signs of Defrost
• Water or steam coming from the outdoor unit
• Outdoor fan stopping and restarting
• Brief cool air or backup heat turning on
• Hissing, humming, or clicking sounds

• Prevents ice from blocking airflow and forcing the system to work harder
• Helps maintain consistent heat during cold weather

• Defrost cycles lasting longer than 15 minutes
• Heavy ice buildup that doesn’t clear
• Loud or unusual noises like banging or grinding
