There’s a Good Reason Chucks Not Painting touch-ups for FREE!!!

“Free touch-ups… for life?” 👀

That sounds great until you actually stop and think about what that means.

Who’s paying for the labor? The travel time? The materials? And what happens five, ten, or fifteen years down the road when that original job has long since been completed?

There’s nothing wrong with standing behind your work. Every professional contractor should. But warranties, callbacks, maintenance, and lifetime promises all have a cost—and somehow that cost has to be built into your pricing.

And this is exactly why pricing in the painting industry is so interesting.

Three contractors can look at the exact same project, with the exact same scope of work, and come back with three completely different prices—and all three may have legitimate reasons for those numbers.

Labor rates, overhead, material pricing, supplier relationships, margins, warranty obligations, production systems… it all matters.

This September 15th through the 18th, I’ll be at the PCA Residential Conference in Nashville speaking on Pricing Realities in the Painting Industry, and these are exactly the kinds of conversations we’re going to have.

Because pricing isn’t just about what you charge today.

Good prep makes the finish.

Before painting these baseboards, we masked off the hardwood floors with AXIS Premium Washi Tape to keep everything protected and give us clean, controlled lines.

Then comes the satisfying part—pulling all that tape, seeing the pile hit the floor, and walking the room with freshly painted baseboards.

A little extra time in prep saves a lot of time in cleanup.

Getting the workout in before another stretch of traveling—and apparently I can’t make it through a session without turning the gym into a dance floor for a few minutes.

For me, training has never just been about staying in shape. It’s a chance to clear my head, reset, have some fun, and get myself ready for whatever is coming next.

A little work. A little dancing. Then it’s time to pack the bags.

Sometimes overspray happens.

While spraying these baseboards, I caught a little paint on the bottom of the cabinet. Not ideal, but also not a reason to immediately reach for a strong cleaner or harsh chemical.

With most fresh water-based paints, especially within the first 24 hours, a damp rag and a little patience can often take care of it.

The key is catching it early.

Start with the least aggressive method first. Water, a clean rag, and light pressure. If that handles it, there’s no reason to introduce chemicals that could potentially affect the surrounding finish.

Knowing how to correct the small mistakes is just as important as knowing how to prevent them.

Work clean, catch it early, and don’t overcomplicate the fix.
