**A COUPLE MINUTES WITH MIKE**
Today I want to talk about something we get asked about quite a bit:
**Should I build a pole building, a conventional stick-framed building, or a pre-engineered steel building?**
And the answer is — **it depends on what you're trying to accomplish.**
A pole building can be a great option. They're generally pretty quick to construct, they can be economical, and for shops, agricultural buildings, equipment storage, and certain other uses, they can make a lot of sense.
A conventional stick-framed building gives you a lot of flexibility. If you're going to have offices, finished spaces, a lot of doors and windows, or you want something that feels and functions more like a conventional building, stick framing may be the better option.
Then you've got pre-engineered steel buildings.
When you're talking about larger clear spans, taller buildings, commercial or industrial use, heavy-duty applications, or something you expect to expand in the future, steel can start making a lot of sense.
But here's the part I really want people to understand:
**The cheapest price today isn't always the least expensive building in the end.**
You have to think beyond what it costs to put the shell up.
How are you going to use the building?
Are you heating it?
Are you finishing the inside?
Do you need wide-open space without interior columns?
Are you putting equipment in it?
Are you going to add onto it someday?
What's maintenance going to look like?
And how long do you expect that building to serve you?
Those answers can completely change which building system makes the most sense.
So before you go to a contractor and say, *"I need a 40-by-60 shop. What's the cheapest way to build it?"*
Start with:
**"Here's what I need this building to do."**
Tell your contractor the purpose first.
Tell them what you're doing today, what you might be doing ten years from now, and what matters most to you.
Then let a good contractor help you determine which building system actually fits that purpose.
Because sometimes spending a little more money in the right places today can save you a whole lot of money — and headaches — down the road.
**Don't start with the building type. Start with the purpose.**
