About a year and a half ago, Hunter and Bryce came to me with an idea.

They wanted to sell Hot Wheels at local Cars & Coffee events.

Being the business owner I am, my response wasn’t “sure.” It was, “Let’s build a plan first.”

Before I loaned them the startup money, they had homework.

They walked around Cars & Coffee asking owners what kinds of Hot Wheels they would actually buy. They researched market values to figure out what inventory made the most sense. They reached out to event organizers to see who would even let two kids set up and sell.

In December 2024, we started buying inventory. eBay, Target, Safeway… wherever we could find good deals.

From day one, I wanted this to be more than buying and selling toy cars.

We built a simple Excel spreadsheet to track every purchase, every sale, and our inventory. We talk about profits, cash flow, and when it makes sense to reinvest instead of spending everything they make.

What started as a fun idea has become one of my favorite things we do together as a family. Heather is all in too.

At every event, they talk to customers, ask questions, figure out what people are looking for, and work together to make decisions. It’s been amazing to watch their confidence grow.

The biggest lesson for me has been this:

Kids are capable of so much more than we give them credit for if we let them own the process instead of doing it for them.

They’re only 8 and 11, but they’re already learning lessons about customer service, inventory management, finance, communication, and delayed gratification that many adults never have the opportunity to learn.

Whether this turns into a lifelong business or just a great childhood memory doesn’t really matter.

The real return on investment was never the Hot Wheels.

Some projects change buildings.

Some projects change communities.

The Rancho Cordova Community Food Hub was one of those projects.

From the first walkthrough to the grand opening, this project was fueled by an incredible group of people who believed in creating something bigger than themselves. Community leaders, design professionals, trade partners, suppliers, volunteers, and donors all came together with a shared goal: creating a place that will serve local families for years to come.

As the build partner, we were honored to help bring that vision to life. Along the way we faced challenges, solved problems, and watched an underutilized building transform into a resource that will make a lasting impact in our region.

This video tells the full story from start to finish.

Thank you to everyone who played a role in making this project possible. We couldn't be more proud of what was accomplished together.

Watch the full journey below and let us know what part of the transformation stands out most to you.

One of the things we appreciate most is getting to work with talented designers who care as much about the process as they do the finished product.

Over the course of this six month build, Miche Victoria was an incredible partner. Clear communication, thoughtful design decisions, and a shared focus on serving the client made this project a great experience from start to finish.

Here, Jennae shares a little about what that collaboration looked like behind the scenes.

Great homes are rarely the result of one person. They’re built by a team.

Most people only notice the finishes in a remodel.

But on a 100 year old house like The Keating House, what’s underneath matters even more.

We’re rebuilding this home in downtown Sacramento to last another 100 years. That starts at the subfloor.

We’re using AdvanTech subfloor sheeting because old homes deserve modern building science. Better moisture resistance. Better stiffness. Less squeaks. A stronger foundation for every trade that comes after us.

A project like this is about respecting the history of the home while building it to a much higher standard than what existed before.

The goal isn’t just to make it look beautiful.
It’s to make it perform beautifully too.

“You got it right.”

Probably one of the best compliments a contractor can receive.

Especially on a historic renovation.

At Tankersley Build Co., one of our core values is honesty. That starts on day 1 with real conversations about budget, timeline, and complexity, even when those conversations are uncomfortable.

Too many projects start with numbers meant to win the job instead of prepare the client for reality.

Historic homes don’t reward optimism. They reward planning, experience, and transparency.

Anyone can throw out a low number.
Very few can deliver an accurate one.

One of the coolest projects we’ve had the opportunity to work on.

The Keating House in downtown Sacramento is a true historic gem, originally owned by William Keating, a prominent Sacramento businessman and civic leader in the late 1800s. Homes like this are rare. Every detail tells a story.

Because of the home’s historic designation, every decision has mattered throughout the renovation process.

To meet preservation requirements while still delivering modern performance, we installed custom steel windows from that stay true to the home’s original character.

This project has been equal parts craftsmanship, problem solving, and respect for history. We can’t wait to show you more of the details hidden inside this one of a kind home.

Full video drops next week on YouTube.

Stay tuned.

Most contractors talk about quality. That’s expected.

We believe the difference is in the process.

Clear communication. Honest budgets. Weekly meetings. Real planning before construction starts. A team that actually keeps clients informed throughout the project.

These are a few of the things we do differently at Tankersley Build Co.
