We had the chance to visit with a client today to review the progress of their pollinator gardens in year 3 and we’re thrilled with the progress.

Prairie Alumroot, Husker Red Beardtongue, Eastern Beebalm and Blue Ice Blue Star are putting on a show while Prairie Smoke nears the end of its season. Tiny flashes of red on the soon-to-be-blooming Indian Pink are sprinkled about as they prepare to take their turn (much to the delight of area hummingbirds).

Shopping at Sanctuary Native Nursery in Roanoke, IN is so much more than picking out plants.

It’s a chance to slow down, wander through the display gardens, notice what’s blooming, hear the birds, watch the pollinators, and imagine what your own yard could become.

Native plants don’t just look beautiful—they help to create life. Recently, in one 5-minute recording at the nursery, we documented 25 different birds singing and calling around us. That’s the kind of abundance these plants help support.

So come visit, take your time, and enjoy the experience. Walk the gardens. Listen and look closely. Ask questions. Get inspired.

We’d love to help you choose plants, but we’d also love for you to simply enjoy being here.

It seems there are very few things that will keep us from helping homeowners incorporate native plants into their landscapes. Yesterday we had the pleasure of meeting new clients in Terre Haute and Carmel. Unfortunately the return trip home required a bit of patience with Indy construction traffic.

I can't complain about this too much because I don't often deal with the never-ending construction project that is "Clear Path 465." To the brave souls living in the northern suburbs of Indy... bless you. You definitely deserve to come home to your own garden sanctuary!

Big thanks to the Kilsoquah Preserve neighborhood for going native with a refresh of their entrance signage. A nice bonus was the removal of invasive burning bush shrubs!

Sometimes clients become close friends—and that’s one of the most meaningful parts of this work.

When you spend time in someone’s landscape season after season, you get to know more than just the garden. You get to know the people, the stories, the hopes for the space, and the joy that comes from watching it grow and change together.

Here we are creating a new “no-mow” grass lawn on a hillside—an alternative to traditional turf that will help stabilize the slope, soften the landscape, and create a more natural feel.

Around us, Shooting Star, Bird’s Foot Violet, and Wild Geranium are showing off, while prairie plants like Prairie Dropseed, Black-eyed Susan, and Butterfly W**d are beginning to wake up for the season.

Spring is a beautiful time for cleanup, planting, and reimagining what a landscape can be.

If your landscape is ready for a refresh—or you’re curious about converting part of your yard into native planting—we’d love to help.

Looking for a fun Mother’s Day activity for Mom?

Why not plant a native shrub or two together and create something beautiful that supports birds, butterflies, bees, and other native wildlife for years to come? 🌿

In addition to the large selection of perennials, Sanctuary Native Nursery just restocked a sweet selection of native shrubs and trees including New Jersey Tea, Common Ninebark, Buttonbush, Smooth Hydrangea, Fringe Tree and many more!

It’s a thoughtful gift, a memorable activity, and a lasting addition to the landscape.

Stop by the nursery this week and pick out something special for Mom! The nursery is open 10am-2pm through Saturday. Closed Mother's Day.

🌾 This is why you let your native grasses stand each winter!

When you skip the fall cutback, your garden doesn’t go dormant—it transforms. Upright stems catch frost and snow, sway in winter light, and bring life and structure to the coldest months.

Furthermore, those same seed heads become an essential food source for overwintering songbirds, while fallen leaves settle in as natural mulch, protecting roots and nourishing the soil. By leaving grasses intact, you’re giving wildlife a helping hand and allowing vital ecosystem processes to continue—right in your own backyard.

A winter garden isn’t messy. It’s alive! ❄️
