🔧 How to sister a fence post — support a leaning fence without replacing the whole run
Got a fence post that's leaning or rotted at the bottom? You don't always need a new fence. A sister post — a new post set right beside the old one — can hold it straight again.
Here's how:
1️⃣ Dig a new hole right next to the old post, and clear out roots and loose dirt.
2️⃣ Drop in a new pressure-treated post.
3️⃣ Check it on both sides with a post level — that's the orange level in the photos — and brace it so it stays plumb while you work.
4️⃣ Set it in place with post foam or concrete, then backfill and tamp the soil tight around it.
5️⃣ Fasten the sister post to the fence, trim any excess foam, and backfill the top — now the old post has a new partner holding it up.
The result: a straight, solid fence again, without tearing everything out.
Don't want to dig it yourself? I can help.
