I would like to take some time and share an experience I had earlier in the week. The fire department called us to a scene of a single family home that took a lightning strike and started a fire in the attic. I arrived on the scene about 40 minutes after being notified by the FD. I walked over and spoke with the Chief and he took me and introduced me to the family/homeowner. I didn’t walk up with a clipboard I walked up with my initial intentions focused on what the families immediate needs were. I could tell pretty quick the homeowner was panicked not just from the event but something else. I asked what he needed and he stated he lost his wallet he thought he possible dropped it when he got out of his truck that was parked out by the road due to emergency vehicles blocking his driveway. I took him back to where he parked and we started searching the ditch which had standing water, we searched from that point all the way to the house and inside the house. This search lasted about 30 minutes before the wallet was located. At no time during this search did I mention services or repairs I was solely helping the individual that had already went thru enough find his personal belongings. Once the wallet was located the homeowners demeanor changed and he was ready to start getting items out of the house and eventually singed the work auth for the BoardUp.

Fast forward

Today I went to lunch with that Fire Chief and the first thing he said to me was he noticed how much time I spent with the homeowner trying to retrieve the lost item. The chief told me he knew at that moment he had made the right call to call 1-800-BoardUp. He said you never pushed or pressured the homeowner to sign anything you were truly there to help and I really appreciate that.

The moral to this story is every time we arrive on the scene we are being watched not just by the homeowner but the neighbors, our competitors and the fire department. I encourage each of you to always remember to have a servant mindset and heart. Little things like helping find a wallet or carry personal belongings out of the house make an impression and it’s the right thing to do well before we ever pull out a contract or put the first board on the structure. These type of interactions are what separate us from others. Treat people good and always do the right thing.

Thanks for reading sorry for the long post.
