I recently read an article that talked about being “range ready” on a typical training day. The author remarked on the importance of being well hydrated and comfortable (well fed) leading up to and during training. His point was that being comfortable, hydrated and prepared make for better training sessions and therefore better “results”. If putting all your shots in a nice cluster in the 10 ring and this helps you do it, great. More power to you.
As for me, I like to introduce a bit more of a challenge into my training days. Not that I am disparraging hydration or food, far from it. I appreciate being hydrated as much as the next person. I just prefer to know that I am at least attempting to inject some real life into my training days. I train as though I just hiked for some time before encountering a target species for my hunt, like a deer or turkey. Since I am not wearing my day pack at the range the best I can do sometimes is to run down range during a clear and replace my target then run back. This will help accelerate my heart rate and breathing exactly as if I had just come down a long path or crested a hill. This makes me concentrate on my shooting skills in a less than comfortable situation. Focus on my breathing. Control my heart rate and trigger pull. This helps me feel better about what happens in real life when I spot that deer on a nearby hill or in a pasture.
Train for what feeds your passion. Just do it so you can achieve your goals.
Train hard and keep your sights clear.
