February/March/April landscape to Do's:
*(early February) Prune back all Perennials and remove the old growth from last year so that they will grow fresh new growth this year. The plants will look much better for it. Everyone seems to always pass over the Salvia Greggii because it blooms early and looks good early Spring but I promise you, you will be glad you did. Lavender Lantana is the only exemption as it flowers best early Spring so trim it back in late June when flowering stops.
After pruning it's a good time to blow out or remove leaves from where they gathered under the Perennials so the plant beds will be nice and clean. (unless you use leaves as mulch).
* Apply a pre-emergent (early February) to w**d prone areas in order to reduce w**d germination (granite walkways etc.)
* Apply a "slow release" fertilizer (Osmocote is one I prefer) to plant beds (no w**d control in fertilizer for plant beds.)
* Add mulch now that the Perennials are cut back, the beds are clean and fertilized. This will give your landscape a nice clean appearance and also help retain moisture and reduce w**ds.
**** If your like me and have many Live Oaks in your landscape please ignore everything I just said except pruning back the perennials and applying pre emergent. After all the leaves and pollen have fallen from the trees (April) then continue with the rest of the items. ; )

Seriously! Do it now! 🙂

October / Early November to do's:
*Fertilize Lawn and Shrubs with a Slow Release Fertilizer.
*Top-dress lawn areas that need additional soil and nutrients with a good "top-dress soil" (must be w**d free - use only soils made for lawn dressing).
*Apply Pre-emergent to pathways or plant beds that are prone to w**ds to reduce w**d seed germination and reduce your work removing or treating later.
*Watch for and treat Brown Patch or other fungal diseases that may pop up in lawn areas as it cools down this time of year.
*Apply Dormant oil spray for shrubs for long term insect control.
*Now is the time to overseed your lawn with "Perennial Rye grass seed" if you want a green lawn all winter. (not recommended for St. Augustine lawns)
*Now is also the best time to plant evergreen plants and trees

It's time to Fertilize the lawn - Use a good granular 15-5-10 ish with Iron Supplement or a liquid lawn food with Iron works great in early summer as well. Be sure the lawn is not dried out or stressed before application and follow manufacture directions for the product you choose.

*Watch for insect problems on plants and in lawn areas. Treat as early as possible if signs begin. Typically Lace bugs, White Fly's, Woolly Aphids and Spider Mites on plants will cause flowering to decrease and leaves to curl. Cinch bugs and Grubs in lawn areas can quickly become active.
*Aphids on plants and Crape Myrtles. You will notice the leaves turning black.
*Powdery Mildew can also be present on pants and especially Crape Myrtles . Treat with fungicide.
*Spider mites in Cypress, Rosemary, Verbena, Lantana and other plants are very common with heat and drought stress. The interior of the foliage starts to brown or flowering stops.
*Check your irrigation system!!! Many controllers these days have an easy check feature which will allow you to set all stations to water for say 2 minutes and you can walk around the yard and evaluate any issues there may be. One small problem can become an expensive one when it's a hundred degrees everyday for a month or two. Not to mention everyone else is calling the sprinkler guys at this time and it may be a while before they can get to you for service!
Consider upgrading your old outdated irrigation controller to one of the new Wi-Fi controllers which have integrated automatic weather adjustments. You can walk around your yard and turn on the zones from the app on your phone and check for issues.
* Add mulch to plant beds. A thick layer will help retain moisture in the soil.
* It's also a good idea to selectively prune perennials to reduce there size which will help the plant by reducing the amount of foliage it has to support. This can also be useful to reduce insects without having to spray insecticides. Just be sure to remove the trimmings from site.
*Stay cool everyone and happy gardening!

For all you that have lots of live oak trees, now it's time to do a final clean up of the leaves and pollen. Pressure wash and clean everything then apply your slow release plant fertilizer and mulch in all the beds.
Apply fertilizer to lawn areas now as well or topdress lawn with lawn dressing soil specifically made for the task. Do not apply topsoil or any other soil or you will be importing w**ds.
Then we can all enjoy fiesta and celebrate all the hard Spring work!

***Freezing temps for several days coming our way around 7 January!
*Cover your above ground Sprinkler Backflow device to help protect against freeze. (you have one of these if you have a septic system)
*Protect any hose bibs or exposed water lines in your yard.
*Cover or bring in any tropical plants.
*Cover Sago palms and other tropical palms. Agave and Cacti plants
*Cover less cold hardy shrubs and perennials if you do not want to replace them (Viburnum, Purple Fountain Grass, Batface Cuphea, Guara come to mind)
