Your AC could stop working this summer because of a $20 part.

Capacitors and contactors wear out over time and give warning signs before they fail completely. Here’s what to watch for:
1. AC clicks on but shuts off immediately
2. Humming sound but the unit won’t start
3. Fan runs but no cold air comes out

Este calor que paso es una señal de lo que viene. Antes de prender el aire por primera vez, revisa esto:

Filtro. Ponlo contra la luz. Si no ves a través de él, cámbialo. ($10–$30 en Home Depot)
Salidas de aire. Asegúrate que estén completamente abiertas en todos los cuartos.
Rejilla de retorno. El ventilador grande en el pasillo o techo. Que nada lo tape.
Unidad exterior. Limpia hojas y basura alrededor. Deja 2 pies de espacio libre.
Al final préndelo. Aire frío en 5–10 minutos es buena señal. Aire caliente o ruidos raros necesitan atención.

These random heat waves are a preview of summer. Before you turn your AC on for the first time, here’s a 10 minute checklist:
1. Filter:hold it up to light. Can’t see through it? Replace it. ($10–$30 at Home Depot)
2. Supply vents: make sure every vent in the house is fully open.
3. Return grille: the large vent in your hallway or ceiling. Make sure nothing is blocking it.
4. Outdoor unit: clear leaves and debris. Give it 2 feet of clearance.
5. Turn it on: set it to cool and listen. Cold air in 5–10 min is a good sign. Warm air or strange noises need attention.
