If you're a residential contractor — and you LIKE residential — this post is for you.

You don't need to chase commercial to grow.

You don't need a new software stack.

You don't need to "scale up" into a sector that runs on different math.

What you DO need: your weekends back. Time with your family. A business that doesn't text you at 9pm because the wrong subcontractor showed up at the wrong house.

That's not a software problem. That's an operations problem. BuilderTrend, CoConstruct, JobTread, Houzz Pro — these tools are great at what they do. They hold the data, they keep your client portal clean, they manage your selections and your change orders. They don't fix the workflow underneath them.

I help residential contractors clean up the workflow so the business runs without them being on every call. You keep your sector. You keep your margins. You get your life back.

Tag a residential contractor who needs to read this. Or DM me — I open 5 strategy slots a month.

Stop buying new tools. Bend the one you have.

Most contractors run 3 or 4 platforms and use about 15% of each.

Then they hear about a fifth tool and start the migration before testing whether the existing one already does it.

Last week I sat with an electrician convinced his stack was broken. We opened a feature he'd never touched and built 80% of what he wanted in 20 minutes.

You don't have a tool problem. You have a "nobody had time to figure out what the tool can do" problem.

💬 How many software subscriptions are you paying for right now?

Tile guys — your past work IS your sales pitch. Why is it sitting on your phone?

Visual proposal: your install photos + the designer's inspo + your material recommendations, all in a clean web link the homeowner can scroll on the couch.

Bids close themselves when the owner's already imagining the finished bathroom.

Technology is powerful, but only when it's paired with the right processes and people.

We're incredibly grateful for the recognition and excited about what the future holds for AI and construction technology.

The construction industry has a weird relationship with experience.

I’ve had people question my 30 years of experience because I don’t look old enough.

I’ve also had clients tell me they’re afraid to implement AI because they don’t want to put people out of work.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth:

AI isn’t replacing good people.

It’s replacing wasted time.

It’s replacing duplicate data entry.
It’s replacing hunting through emails for information.
It’s replacing manual processes that should have been automated years ago.

If your job can be replaced by AI, the problem isn’t AI.

The problem is that your job was never creating value in the first place.

The best estimators, project managers, superintendents, accountants, and executives I’ve worked with aren’t worried about AI.

They’re excited about it.

Because every hour spent on paperwork is an hour NOT spent solving problems, serving clients, managing risk, building relationships, and growing a company.

Construction doesn’t have a labor shortage.

It has an efficiency shortage.

And AI is finally forcing the industry to confront it.

So here’s my question:

Would you rather hire another person to manage a broken process…

Or fix the process and empower the people you already have?

Here's where commercial GCs lose money that nobody talks about:

You don't self-perform. But you treat your subs like they're your own crew.
You tell the framer when to start.
You tell the drywaller when to load.
You tell the taper when to tape.
You tell them when to mud.
You broke the material down to the stick.
You're calling every shot — and you're absorbing every ounce of risk that comes with calling them.

That's not GC work. That's superintendent work layered on top of GC work. And unless you have the bandwidth — actual hours in your week — to run that level of detail across multiple projects, you're not running the job. The job is running you.

Self-performing any portion of the risk requires bandwidth. If you don't have it, don't do it. Stop trying to micromanage trades from a Toyota Tacoma between four jobs.

Most software won't tell you this.

BuilderTrend, JobTread, Contractor Foreman, Houzz Pro will happily let you input every nail in the framing package.

They'll let you build a daily log entry for every screw.

Tracking the small stuff is exactly how you stop seeing the big picture.

Stretched thin running commercial like a one-man band? Let's talk. I've built the infrastructure for volume more than once.

Contractors — quick gut check.

If your CRM is just a place you store phone numbers, you're leaving money on the table.

Real construction case studies from this year are showing what a properly set up CRM actually does:
✅ 50% less time on sales admin
✅ 89% more accurate pipelines
✅ 27% faster bid responses (speed wins bids)
✅ Pays for itself in 6–18 months

I've spent 30+ years in construction, and the pattern is always the same: firms wait until their manual process is already failing before they fix it — after they've lost bids and burned out their estimators.

You don't have to wait for the pain. Start with your bid pipeline, automate that one thing, and measure it.

Want to talk it through? 30 minutes, no sales pitch. You'll walk away with 2–3 things to fix this week.

🚧 More work doesn't always mean more profit.

One of the biggest mistakes I see contractors make is chasing revenue without asking a simple question:

**Can my business actually support the growth?**

I've watched companies double their sales only to end up with:
❌ Less cash in the bank
❌ More employee turnover
❌ More project issues
❌ More stress on ownership

Why?

Because they scaled projects before they scaled systems.

A sustainable construction business growth plan isn't about getting bigger. It's about building the people, processes, financial controls, and leadership structure necessary to grow without sacrificing profitability.

In this article, I break down:
✔️ Revenue vs. profit growth
✔️ Why margin matters more than volume
✔️ The role of safety and operational controls
✔️ Financial planning for contractors
✔️ How to avoid the most common scaling mistakes

If you're trying to grow your construction company from $1M, $5M, $10M, or beyond, this is a must-read.
