Another passion is making baby rattles! These baby rattles are made from the same durable woods used in baseball bat manufacturing. I make them in two sections, the bulb and the stem. First the stem is shaped to ensure compliance with children's toy size regulations, so a child cannot choke on it. Then the bulb is hollowed out with a specialized hollowing tool to allow for that delightful rattling sound!

After cutting the bowl blank from the log on the bandsaw, there are often times large pieces of scrap left over. I try to minimize the amount of good wood that goes to the compost bin, like this black acacia. Instead of throwing it away, we can make some nice baby rattle sized boards!

Let's start with how many bowls begin! These black acacia logs were collected within a day of the tree coming down. Once the logs are collected the pith (the very center of the log) is removed to prevent cracking. From there, we rough cut the logs to a circle and turn them on the lathe. Lastly, we seal the logs to prevent them from drying too fast. In time, we will rough turn the logs into bowl shapes about 1" thick for final drying.
