Sometimes a color consultation transitions into a fun evening with friends. Thank you to my favorite custom closet provider John Plake at Home Storage Solutions in Port Orchard and wife, Lynn, for trusting me with your home interior color update and then taking me back in time to the carefree days of my youth with a Huey Lewis and the News cover band concert. It was a blast working with color, but then so much fun hearing all those songs I've long forgotten!

Just returned from a visit to France. Small bathrooms are fairly common there and I experienced four different space-saving configurations of wet rooms and fixed shower panels (without shower doors) in my accommodations. It was a great opportunity for me to observe the splash patterns for the different shower panel lengths and whether a wet room was a splash nightmare. I'm actually planning to do a wet room for a guest bath in my personal residence and I've wondered if it would be cold as well. I report that it wasn't in either of the two I experienced. (But it was also summer!) I think I would definitely create an enclosure if it was one of those configurations you see with the shower area and freestanding tub side-by-side as part of a much larger bathroom.

It's fun for me to study spaces and ask myself if I would do things the way the designer did. I wasn't certain I would have bisected the floor of the bath shown by switching from a 4x4 to a 12x24 tile, for example. It does differentiate the wet area from the toilet area and adds visual interest, but it also makes the room feel smaller. The grout was gray which did help create connection between the two floorings. Hmmmm. What would you have done? And why? Just for fun! There's no right or wrong answer! 😁

I doubt I’ll ever tire of viewing gorgeous homes. By happy coincidence, Chelan, WA’s “1st Annual Home Tour” coincided with a getaway this weekend and it was inspiring to experience such spectacular home design. I’ll be plagiarizing the concept of the glass enclosure for the water closet (toilet area) as a space saver. Baths were luxurious statements and 10’ and 11’H window walls left me drooling over the spectacular views. And though not interior design, those long pavers for entry access are awesome. I confess, I do love pretty.

I’m really enjoying working with the warmer color tones clients are asking for as grey takes a backseat to new color trends. This palette blends a yummy mix of browns ranging from just a whisper to a rich bold statement. But an analogous color scheme of deep blue-green and neutralized green-blue adds interest for what will all come together as Warm and Welcoming.

I've had two young potential clients inquire about my services over the last two weeks. Nothing unusual about that . . . except . . . Both have designs they completed using AI. They just want me to do a consultation and tell them what finish materials will fulfill those designs in their budget. Hmmmm.

I've gotten on the bandwagon and have been delving into AI tools these last few months. I'm amazed by it. There's much to learn, but I am digging deeper and deeper into that study.

There is a lot of talk and fear about AI putting people like me out of business. So after hanging up from the inquiry call today, I asked ChatGPT the important question: Why would anyone need an interior designer instead of you? The agent's answer was what I should have already known . . .

The agent said that it cannot step into the space and evaluate the light and how it will affect the character of the space or its affect on colors selected. AI doesn't see the rest of the house. It doesn't see the scale and proportion of the rooms. It doesn't have finish samples to share and review with you in the actual space, and then leave with you so you can view them as the weather and light of the day changes over time--to experience how you feel with those colors and textures. AI makes things Pinterest-pretty; I make them personally right. And here's what it said that I loved most: "If someone just wants quick inspiration, I’m useful. If they want a space that works, lasts, and feels right in real life, they need you."

I agree.

P.S. This photo is a mock-up of a preliminary bedroom concept for a client to help her visualize the bedroom furniture and paneled bed wall she was considering. It was my first try at AI-generated renderings, but what a tool this will be.
