Sometimes the best way to move a project forward is to slow down. ☕️

This morning started with beautiful views, followed by my favorite omelet at Hager’s Market and some focused planning for an upcoming full gut kitchen renovation in Amherst.

We’re changing window sizes and locations to work with a new cabinet layout. Before ordering, I take the kitchen designer’s renderings and work through everything to scale, checking measurements, trim widths, cabinet clearances, and those tight spots where every inch matters.

Those details make the difference between pieces that simply fit and a finished kitchen that feels intentional. Windows are a big investment. Taking time now gives both me and the homeowners confidence before the order goes in.

And a good breakfast makes a pretty great office. If you’re in the area, stop by Hagers Market. It’s a special, family operated spot with wonderful people and incredible omelets. One of my favorite places to grab a bite, settle in, and think things through.

Homeowner challenge 🌧️

Roof runoff was hitting the stairs and splashing back against the framing. Years of repeated soaking led to rot and a sagging floor. An earlier repair addressed some damage, but the water kept coming.

Before this porch could become a four season space, we had to get the basics right.

We rebuilt the band joist and front wall, added two pier footings, and patched the fir flooring. Then we insulated the floor and enclosed its underside with plywood, taping the seams to help keep drafts out.

And those gutters? We walked the homeowners through the problem, and they’ve contacted a gutter company to arrange installation. New framing deserves a drier future.

That’s the owner-operator approach at Cronin Craft: understand why something failed, explain what needs attention, and help put a lasting solution in motion.

Phase one is complete. We’ll return next year for the remaining insulation, new windows, and an exterior door. One step closer to enjoying this porch in every season. ❄️🌷☀️🍁

A good day of hard work, catching up on processing logs and getting ready to start splitting firewood. Cold weather is coming, and it feels good to see what I’ve accomplished today.

Days like this remind me how grateful I am for the lessons passed down through my family, especially from my father, Thomas K Cronin

**Work hard. Take care of your family. Be kind **

These are values I witnessed growing up, on both sides of my family, and especially through my parents. They weren’t just things I was told. They were things I watched people live by every day.

Those lessons run deep. They’ve shaped how I approach life, how I treat the people I work with and work for, and ultimately how I built a business doing something I truly love.

Feeling grateful today for where I came from, the people who shaped me, and the opportunity to carry those values forward.

We’re proud of this one. This is the level of craftsmanship and thoughtful coordination we bring to our projects, and it’s a pleasure to see all that effort come together.

As we got deeper into this kitchen renovation, it became clear that leaving the attached porch untouched wasn’t going to make sense.

The porch had structural issues, deteriorated trim and framing, rotted mahogany decking, and had mostly become a storage area for garden tools.

So we gave it the attention it needed.

We addressed the structural issues, repaired and replaced damaged framing and trim, replaced sections of rotted mahogany decking, and brought the porch back to life. Taylor Painting & Power Washing followed behind us with a fresh paint job, and it’s looking fantastic.

The final step will happen in the spring, when warmer temperatures allow Steve to sand and oil the mahogany decking properly.

What was once a dingy storage area is now becoming a little outdoor sanctuary where the homeowners can sit, watch their kids play, and enjoy being outside.

A good renovation isn’t always about sticking rigidly to the original scope. Sometimes it’s about recognizing what the house needs and making the whole space work better.

That’s a wrap at the meditation center.

We had a week and a half between meditation courses to complete the women’s side dining hall project: new windows, interior trim, exterior trim, and siding. Mission accomplished ✅🤓

We chose materials built for the long haul: Marvin fiberglass windows, clear pine interior trim, and Lifespan exterior clapboards and trim. Everything was installed with longevity, durability, and New England weather in mind.

Brian and I really enjoy this kind of work. Do it right, use good materials, pay attention to the details, and leave behind something we’re proud of. It really is that simple.

Today we cleaned up the site and handed the space back just in time to welcome the next group of meditators.

We’ll be back in the spring for the next phase: replacing all of the men’s dining hall windows and installing new interior and exterior trim.

A satisfying project from start to finish.

That’s a wrap for the week at the meditation center. We finished up all the interior trim around the new windows in the women’s dining hall, and it’s looking great.

As usual, we’re always trying to find that sweet spot between craftsmanship, attention to detail, and efficiency.

For this one, we pre-assembled our sills and extension jambs and pocket-screwed them directly into the windows for a clean, tight fit. We also batch-cut our casing so each window was trimmed from the same boards, allowing the grain to flow naturally around the opening.

That’s one of the enjoyable parts of stain-grade work. You have to slow down enough to see what the wood is telling you and make the grain part of the finished design.

We also took care of our painter by pre-sanding every board before installation, removing mill chatter and glazing and giving the finish a better surface to bond to.

Taylor Painting & Power Washing rolls in Monday to apply three finish coats, and these windows will be ready for many future meditation retreats.

Good week. Good work. Onto the next phase… siding!

Another productive day on the window, trim and siding project at the meditation center.

Today Brian tackled the exterior trim while I shifted inside to start prepping for the interior trim work.

Every crew has their process, and we have ours. For exterior trim, we like Lifespan, a pressure-treated pine product that comes heavily oil primed. We pre-assemble everything and use a few tricks to account for the buildup of the nailing fins on new construction windows so everything finishes out clean and tight.

As always, it’s about finding that balance between craftsmanship and production. Brian was able to batch cut, pre-assemble, back-prime, and install the trim on all four windows today.

Good systems. Good craftsmanship. Good production.

Tomorrow we keep the momentum going. Things are looking good up here. 🔨

Productive day with Brian today. As usual, working smart, efficient, and keeping things moving.

I thought I’d put together a little step-by-step series showing how we approach a window and siding project like this. There are a lot of details and variables to consider along the way, and each one plays a part in getting to the finished product.

The goal is simple: do it right from the inside out so it looks beautiful and holds up to New England weather for years to come.

Check out the steps. Great progress today, and tomorrow we start bringing the interior trim together.
