When a local man got locked out of his house over the weekend, he did what many of us would do. He pulled out his smart phone, did a quick internet search, and called a locksmith. But that turned out to be a mistake.

We received a follow up from a client whom's home we rekeyed a few months back. This client called us to rekey his house as his daughters purse was stolen in another county with her keys in it. We promptly rekeyed the home that day. The follow up today was to let us know that someone came to the home and attempted to use the stolen keys on the rekeyed lock! The client caught the person and the local authorities have the person in custody! This is just another example as to why your home is such an important thing to secure in the case of lost or stolen keys! Quality Business Network - Simi Valley

The Facts About Safes!

For maximum protection you must purchase the right safe for the job!
Safes have been around for hundreds of years. Years ago they were rarely used in homes. Today many homeowners need a good safe.
Good security will have "Layers". A good alarm system is a "Layer". Good deadbolts on exterior doors may be another layer. The more layers the better. Remember, these layers can always be compromised.
A good safe may be the last line of defense for your most prized possessions.

We know many of you have noticed safes for sale at home/hardware centers, and department stores. Some of you may have purchased one of these safes. This is a step in the right direction. Although a big problem exists.

THE PROBLEM: consumers are often misled into believing these safe are secure, even though they may not be. As a locksmith for many years, I can tell you it happens all the time.

FACT: Most inexpensive home center safes offer NO security ratings.
Various security ratings exist for safes. We have an extensive section here at Smart Lock And Safe devoted to safe ratings. If you want to store anything of value inside your safe, you should know about Safe ratings.

FACT: Most inexpensive home center safes have NO relocker device.
Relocker devices are used in good safes to resist punch attacks on the dial and/or lock. This device will trigger additional mechanisms to further secure the safe during an attack.

FACT: Most inexpensive home center safes have NO drill resistant hard plate protecting the lock.
Hard plate is special metal "sandwiched" between the door and lock on good safes to protect the lock from drill attack.

FACT: Most safes buyers are PRIMARILY concerned with burglary protection. Fire protection is a big concern, but statistics prove you are much more likely to have a burglary, than a fire.

Our advise is to get the correct protection, for the valuables you intend to store in your safe. Most Safe Buyers want Burglary, and Fire protection. Let us guide you towards an educated decision.

6 quick tips from the Federal Trade Commission to help avoid a Locksmith scam:

1. Be wary of locksmith companies that answer calls with generic phrases like “locksmith services,” rather than a specific name. If a locksmith cannot or will not provide the business’ legal name, find another locksmith.

2. When the locksmith arrives, ask for identification, including a locksmith license where applicable. Alabama, California, Illinois, Louisiana, New Jersey, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas all require locksmiths to be licensed.

3. Get an estimate before any work begins, including emergency service.

4. Ask about extra charges for things like emergency hours, mileage or service call minimums before you agree to have the work performed.

5. If the locksmith’s on-site price doesn’t match the phone estimate, don’t allow the work to be performed.

6. If you’re locked out, be cautious of companies that recommend or insist on drilling or replacing the lock up front. Most experienced locksmiths have the skills and tools to unlock almost any door.

Most residential calls we receive are about people losing their key, but, sometimes a key breaks in the lock and it can keep you locked out or unable to relock your home, car, or business. Truth is this dilemma can be more of a pain to deal with than a missing key. Not only are you locked out, but even a spare key can’t get you out of this dilemma. A broken key is a delicate situation because if it’s not handled properly not only will the key need replacing, but so will the lock.

Your first instinct might be to take a sharp pointy object and try to extract the key – Please DO NOT DO THIS. Without proper training, poking and prying in a lock can jam the key in further and cause damage to the lock or even completely destroy it. We at Smart Lock and Safe stress this fact to all of our customers because we would hate for a problem that could have been easily solved to escalate to a more extensive and expensive one. You see, a professional locksmith, in many cases, can extract a broken key and simply re-cut a new key. If the lock is irreparably damaged during the key extraction process then the old lock will need to be removed so a new lock will can be installed and all new keys can be cut.
