Nothing's in the ground yet.

Every plant gets set where it's going first, spaced for the size it'll be — not the size it is in the pot. Most people want the bed to look full the day it's done, so they crowd everything in. It works for one season.

Then it fills in, and there's nowhere for anything to go. Plants compete, air stops moving through them, and you're pulling half the bed back out to save the other half.

Spacing it right means waiting a little. It also means not doing it twice.

Kevin's watering plants that aren't in the ground yet.

On a commercial job the material shows up before the site is ready for it. A load comes in, gets staged, and sits a day or two waiting on the rest of the job. Those plants get watered every day they sit. Same as if they were already planted.

It's a small part of the job nobody sees.

Mowing crews, hardscape, irrigation — everything for the week gets sorted out in this lot before a single truck leaves.

Commercial irrigation is a different animal than a backyard system. Everything underground has to be right before the concrete and asphalt go over the top of it, because once it's covered, it's covered.

Get it right down there and nobody has to think about it again.

Trent was out in Brandon this morning for the ribbon cutting at River Park Townhomes — a Van Buskirk build we landscaped this summer.

Lot after lot until the whole community lined up. That's the part people don't think about on a build this size.

Good-looking place, and it's leasing now. Congrats to the Van Buskirk team on getting it open.

Last fall this was a dirt bank with no good way up to the door.

Steep grade right off the sidewalk and nothing holding it back. Common setup on older Sioux Falls lots.

We cut the slope, ran drainage behind the wall, and stacked boulders until the grade had something to sit on. Paver steps up from the sidewalk, a landing partway, then another run to the top. Washed rock through the beds so water moves away from the house instead of into it.

Seed wants soil that's still warm and air that's already cooling. Late August into September is when both line up here.

There's also less competition right now. Crabgrass and the other summer weeds are done pushing, so new grass gets the room instead of losing it.

Aeration is what makes the seeding work. Pulling cores opens ground that's been packed down all summer so water, air, and seed get to the roots instead of sitting on top.

Frost lands here somewhere between late September and early October most years, and seed needs a couple weeks ahead of that. Sooner is better than later.

You can seed in spring. This is just the stretch that gives you the best odds.

Nobody gets to a ribbon cutting overnight.

By the time somebody's standing there with the scissors, there's a lot already behind them — the risk, the money, the years of showing up before anybody was watching. And plenty still ahead of them.

We were at six of those around Sioux Falls this month. Some were new. Some were anniversaries. All of them took a long time to get to.

Congrats to all six. We're all building the same town — good people to be around.
