Construction projects can take a lot longer than originally anticipated or even come to a complete standstill if severe issues pop up. A comment we actually get quite a bit is, “I’m really surprised how fast this went.” Generally, if everything works out as planned, we are in and out in less time that the homeowner expects. There are more than a few factors that can disrupt the timeline: plumbing, electrical, other trades, waiting on stone to be cut, etc. However, we do our best to get your projects done in a timely manner. We wouldn’t want to deal with a construction mess any longer than absolutely necessary, so we don’t expect our clients to either!

Shower waterproofing is called a "system" because it relies on multiple matching parts—such as membranes, boards, corners, and drains—that must all work together to stop leaks, rather than using just a single waterproof paint or sheet.

Tile and grout leak; they are NOT waterproof. Water always seeps through tiny holes in the grout, meaning the protection must happen behind the tile.

Multiple matched parts create a complete setup using joint bands, pre-formed corners, specialized drains, curbs, and backer boards engineered by the same manufacturer to fit seamlessly.

No weak links: If one piece—like a corner seam or pipe connection—uses mismatched materials or a different brand, water can slip through the gap and rot the wood framing.

Everyone can argue about which system is best to use, although the real issue isn't the brand you choose, but mixing materials that do not belong together.

⚠️Misunderstanding Membrane Dynamics: Many installers fail to realize that tile and grout are porous and that the membrane itself is the true waterproofing barrier.

⚠️Improper Surface Preparation: Failing to clean substrates, leaving dust, or applying liquid membranes over incompatible materials results in poor adhesion and peeling.

⚠️Incorrect Slope-to-Drain: Traditional mortar beds or pan liners require a pre-slope of roughly 2% to ensure water flows toward the drain rather than pooling under the tile.

⚠️Improper Overlaps and Coverage: Forgetting to wrap membranes up curbs, failing to install puddle flanges, or not fully embedding tiles in mortar (back-buttering) provides avenues for water to travel into wall cavities and subfloors.

Because these failures are gradual rather than immediate, they often go unnoticed until significant mold, rot, or structural damage has already occurred. In the event of a catastrophic failure, standard homeowner's insurance rarely covers the damage, classifying it as a gradual maintenance issue.
