20 million acres or more of U.S. farmland is contaminated with toxic PFAS chemicals due to the practice of using PFAS-contaminated sewage sludge biosolids as fertilizer, which then contaminates our food and water. Lab testing has found dangerous levels of PFAS in crops and animals raised for food on land that is contaminated.

A previous EPA risk assessment indicated a need to protect the nation’s water and food supply by banning the use of toxic biosolids as fertilizer on farms and home gardens. But the Trump EPA has chosen to do nothing. And the agency now wants public input on its plan to do nothing.

Is “organic” always better for your lawn?

Not necessarily. It depends on where it comes from. Some fertilizers and soil amendments can contain biosolids, which may contain PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals.”

TLC Tompkins Lawn Care does not use biosolids in our lawn care programs. We believe you should know what you’re putting on the soil around your home.
