August is a time of bounty and overwhelm. This garden is splitting at the seams right now, but man is she beautiful. This client had raised beds that are 8x8, which make it hard to get to the center, so we sprinkled in native pollinator flowers and cut flowers to help fill the unusable space. It’s wild, but gorgeous. I love this time in the garden 💚🥒🌱

20 minutes of weeding that should’ve happened three weeks ago. Wet July means fast weeds, and overgrown pathways trap humidity right next to whatever’s planted there, which is exactly where fungal problems start.

Nature therapy, or just damage control. Save this for the next time you’re deciding whether to ignore the weeds or not. My advice: get them while they’re young!

The vote to save Melick’s Farm Stand didn’t happen last night. It got punted to September 22nd. But that’s not the whole story. 👇

Nearly 500 of you showed up either in person, in the overflow room, and on the livestream. And the YouTube recording keeps climbing (currently at 2k views). I walked away with two big questions:

1. Why did the rules keep shifting? We were told, on record, that the Melick’s case would go first with a vote by July 28th. Instead we waited two hours, everyone got three minutes, not everyone got to speak — and at one point we were told not to comment on the master plan, which is the entire heart of this case.

2. What’s in the “storage demand study”? The board says it proves Bridgewater needs this facility — but no one from the public can seem to get a straight answer on where to read it. If a study is being used to justify tearing down a pillar of this community, we should see it before any vote. Our team is looking into a formal records request.

Here’s the hopeful part: this community totally showed up. And we’re not going anywhere.

Your comments made it onto the official record last night.

I won’t be able to get to Tuesday’s Zoning Board hearing, so I went to the Bridgewater Township Council meeting instead and reported the response to my last video: 40,000+ views, 200+ comments, 874 shares, and the stories behind them. People who grew up at that stand. People who don’t want a working farm traded for a storage unit.

📍If you’re in Bridgewater: show up. Tuesday, 7 PM. You don’t have to speak, being in the room counts.

📽️If you’re not local: get on the YouTube livestream that night. The board can see how many people are watching, and every viewer is one more sign this matters.

This farm stand has sold fruit and vegetables on this spot for decades. Melick's Town Farm has run it since 2005 (it was Bob’s Fruit Stand before that), and the town’s zoning doesn’t allow storage on this lot. The developer needs a variance to do it anyway, and part of the plan turns the site into a retention pond.

Bridgewater’s 2025 Master Plan calls for promoting farm markets like this one. Now is an opportunity to live up to it.

The Zoning Board votes on the variance July 14th, 7 PM, at 100 Commons Way (Bridgewater Municipal Building). Show up if you can, or send the board a written comment. Feel free to use the template at the link below. Public input on the record counts.

The longest-living people on earth don’t go to the gym. They garden.

In nearly every Blue Zone around the world, the folks hitting their 90s and 100s are still out in their garden every day. Weeding, watering, harvesting, bending, reaching, squatting, hauling. It’s low-intensity movement you do without ever calling it a workout, which is exactly the kind of range of motion your body wants to stay limber and strong.

It won’t replace strength training if that’s your goal. But as an activity you’ll still be doing in 40 years? Hard to beat.

The science holds up for the physical activity, but time in the garden also helps to lower cortisol, and getting your hands in the soil gives you access to microbes that help populate your gut biome.

I spent about 20 minutes clearing one badly overgrown bed. By the end, I’d found a friend (stay to the end for him).

Save this for the next time someone tells you gardening isn’t real exercise.

Here’s a great representation of the explosive growth that happens between May and June in a NJ kitchen garden! June is my favorite month in the garden, lush greens, exciting fruits like snap peas, and the beginnings of the “cash crops” like tomatoes.
