The work on the current series of paintings began in the summer of 2011 however the process, theory, and focus had been evolving since 2004. Graffiti is done in public space, and not on canvas. However that idea is at the heart of the series. There are a ton of artist out there using graffiti elements in their art work. and on canvas in galleries. Not to get it to the purpose or heart and soul of graffiti but the above mentioned forms to display make it by definition NOT graffiti. So how do you mix the two? How do you take graffiti and put it in a studio? My thought, Take a painting you like and tag over top of it. That is how the series started and it has been evolving every painting since. My paintings are reflection of the inundation of images that is the visual culture of my generation. MTV(when they played music videos), Saturday morning cartoons, graffiti, commercials, comics, magazines, and the start of the internet have all informed the style and form of the work. My years in College greatly informed my work as well. Less from what I learned in the studio and more from what I saw and heard in art history and theory. The great painters sir Francis Bacon, Goya, Velasquez, Pollok, Picasso to name a few all have had huge influences on my work. My goal with my paintings is not to copy or pay tribute to an artist or style but find my own "voice" realizing and allowing all of my influences to come through. If I am successful the work will be ever in the present creating something contemporary and new.
