🔎 The Unsolved Murders of the O’Brien Family 🔎

For more than half a century, the O’Brien family of St. Louis—a proud Irish Catholic family with deep roots in law enforcement—has carried a burden no family should bear. From 1952 to 2008, three members of their family were brutally murdered within the city limits, and to this day, all three cases remain unsolved.

Lucille O’Brien (1952): The matriarch, robbed and murdered in her home.

Brady O’Brien (1990): Attacked and killed after stumbling upon a party.

Kelty O’Brien (2008): Shot on his way to work, tied to dangerous rivalries in the courier business.

Their story is also carried forward by Mark O’Brien, who served two decades with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, retiring in 2017. Beyond his service, Mark became the well-known voice of Guns ‘N Hoses—the annual Police and Fire boxing event—and today continues to document and fight for justice in the unsolved murders of his family, even while battling serious health issues.

This week on The Brighter Side of Blue, we sit down with former FBI Agent and investigator Frank Brostrom, and Charlyn O’Brien, sister of Brady and Kelty, to share this family’s story of resilience, heartbreak, and an unyielding fight for justice.

Recently completed project in The Legends at Eureka. Downstairs great room, atrium stairwell wall, upstairs great room and foyer. Painted the ceilings and walls Sherwin Williams color Snowbound. Also did some minor drywall and ceiling repair.
This was a fun and challenging project. I think it turned out well. The clients also thought so!

Pressure washing your concrete makes a huge difference. Mold and dirt and grime build up slowly over time. Some people enter their home through the garage and barely notice their front walkway. I completed this project last week. What a change in appearance and curb appeal.

-St. Louis woman uses a fake handyman ad to recruit a killer for her ex-husband. Frank goes undercover, recording her bizarre kill ideas

2. Henry Hersman – “Plane into the Arch” Hoax & Car Bomb (1992)
-Classic car dealer makes a false 911 call claiming his business partner is plotting to fly a plane into the Gateway Arch during Fair St. Louis. While out on bond, Hersman’s life spirals — domestic shootings, and finally ramming his in-laws’ home with a gasoline-filled car bomb.

3. 1996 Atlanta Olympic Bombing & St. Louis Fair Bomb Plot
-Just months out of FBI bomb tech school, Frank helps foil a Fair St. Louis truck bomb plot involving ex-Army suspects and military ordnance. Sent to Atlanta Olympics for bomb security — until the Centennial Olympic Park bombing changes everything. How drunken skateboarders accidentally saved lives, how a fellow bomb tech spotted the live device moments before detonation, and how the FBI’s early focus on Richard Jewell went wrong before Eric Rudolph was identified as the bomber.

From undercover stings and violent fugitives to major domestic terror cases, Frank’s stories give a raw, behind-the-scenes look at FBI work most people only see in movies.

Did this one day project in Washington, MO. Finish color is Sherwin Williams Cargo Pants. A really nice shade of green. Call me for these small projects. We can do one room at a time if that would work for your schedule and budget. I will be going back to this location in a couple of weeks do the dining room. No job too small.

Just completed 3 bedrooms and an office in Wentzville. New color in the bedrooms is Sherwin Williams Shoji White. The office color is Samovar Silver. New owners of the house wanted to freshen up the rooms. Mission accomplished!

Finished this one last week. Two bedrooms in Washington MO. Finish color was Sherwin Williams Restful White. The best part about this project, other than the great clients, was that it was a referral from a previous client. Makes me proud that former clients are willing to pass along my name to their friends and family.

I completed this project last week. The light color on the walls is Sherwin Williams Greek Villa and the accent wall color is Cyberspace. A very nice combination. Also painted the ceiling and an adjoining bathroom

This project was in Pacific, MO. The house was built in 1913 with 10 ft ceilings and plaster crown moulding, 6 inch trim and baseboards on the main floor. Great craftsmanship. It was fun to bring some freshness to this beautiful home. The finishing touch was the plantation shutters installed by Eric Paddock with Love Is Blinds. I highly recommend him. Great person and great work..
