For years, ICS has had the privilege of working alongside Navigate Building Solutions on some of the St. Louis region's most impactful civic, educational, and community-focused projects. • Harris-Stowe State University STEM Building, a major investment in education featuring collaborative learning spaces, a rooftop terrace, and a 600-person event venue

Behind the plaster at Westwood Country Club, our team uncovered a piece of construction history: gypsum block.

Common in commercial buildings from the 1920s through the early 1960s, gypsum block was prized for its non-combustible, fire-resistive properties, in some assemblies achieving 3- to 4-hour fire ratings without relying on wood framing. By the mid-1970s, the material had largely been phased out in favor of modern drywall systems.

Finds like this are part of what makes renovation work so rewarding. Preserving original construction while integrating it with today's building systems takes careful planning, coordination, and a real appreciation for how these structures were built.
