Did you know that fencing is both an Olympic AND Paralympic event?

Wheelchair fencing is competed nationally and internationally in all 3 weapons. Typically, the fencers sit in a specially designed wheelchair that is clipped into a steel track for safety. Since there cannot be any footwork, the fencers rely on blade work and target displacement only.

Since all that specialized equipment is expensive, takes up a lot of space, and isn't needed the majority of time, I was asked to produce a set of wheelchair fencing training seats. These were designed by the folks across the pond at British Fencing, and the plans are available on their website. (They were in metric...it was glorious.)

Got someone in your life who's just so hard to buy for? Yeah, me too. Luckily, I just so happened to have bought some used wine barrels from a couple years back and like the wine they previously contained, the wooden barrel staves are aged perfectly and ready to be transformed into the perfect gift!

How did I go this long without making a flag?

A couple of weeks ago, i was sharing a golf cart with a retired Army officer and somehow we got to talking about woodworking. (Based on how well we were playing, neither of us wanted to talk about golf!) He asked if i could build him a flag about the size of the cart windshield. Of course I said yes, but realized I had never actually built one before. I've made a couple USA flag cutting boards, even a UK flag cutting board, but I've never really built a wall size wooden flag.

Going against my normal SOP, I decided to build a prototype first. Then I figured if I was going to go through the trouble of building it, I could go a step further and practice ornamentation layering as well. In this case, I inscribed the Army Civilan Corps Creed. I had just enough room, and I really tested the maximum extents of my CNC!
