Why do some roofs have light spots or streaks?

In our warm, humid Gulf Coast climate, algae can grow on asphalt shingles, leaving dark or light streaks that make your roof look older than it really is. While algae usually doesn’t mean your roof is failing, it can definitely hurt your home’s curb appeal.

The good news? Most modern architectural shingles are manufactured with algae-resistant technology. These shingles contain copper-infused granules that help prevent algae growth, keeping your roof looking cleaner for years to come.

If your roof is due for replacement, ask about algae-resistant shingles. It’s a small upgrade that can make a big difference in the appearance of your home.

Not sure if your roof just has algae stains or needs attention? Reign Roofing offers free roof inspections and honest advice—no pressure, just answers.

How do we fix roof leaks around vents? Here's some leaks we're fixing today in Richmond, Tx.

We used ice and water shield underlayment — a self-adhering waterproof membrane that bonds directly to the roof deck and seals around every nail hole and fastener. Standard felt underlayment can’t do that. Ice and water shield creates a true watertight barrier, especially in valleys, along eaves, and around any pe*******on where water sneaks in.

Here’s what we did on this job:
✅ Located and diagnosed the exact source of the leak
✅ Removed damaged materials down to the deck
✅ Installed ice and water shield at all vulnerable areas
✅ Finished with a clean repair built to last through Texas weather

If you’ve got a leak, don’t wait. A small problem now becomes a big one after the next storm.

Why You Should Think Twice Before Adding these roof vents...the ol' Whirlybirds 🌀

Turbine vents have been around forever. And honestly? They’ve earned a complicated reputation.

Here’s what your roofer might not tell you upfront:

❌ They have moving parts. Moving parts fail.

Whirlybirds spin in wind, rain, and hail — year after year. Bearings wear out. When they do, they wobble, squeak, and eventually seize up. A seized turbine doesn’t ventilate. It just sits there looking rusty while your attic bakes.

❌ They can become a leak point.

Every pe*******on in your roof is a potential entry point for water. Turbines require flashing and sealing around the base. Over time — especially in our Houston weather — that seal degrades. We’ve pulled plenty of whirlybirds off roofs and found rotted decking underneath.

❌ They underperform in still air.

No wind = no spin = no ventilation. That’s a problem in the dead of summer when it’s 95° and dead calm. The days your attic needs the most help are often the days turbines do the least.

❌ Sizing and placement is easy to get wrong.

Too few turbines, wrong location, or inadequate soffit intake vents and you’ve created a pressure imbalance. You can actually pull conditioned air out of your living space and increase your energy bill.

So what’s the alternative?

Ridge vent with proper soffit intake and turtle vents are the gold standard for passive ventilation — no moving parts, no pe*******ons beyond the ridge line, consistent airflow along the entire roofline. It’s what we recommend on most new installs.

Power ventilators and solar fans are worth considering for large attic spaces where passive systems fall short.

The bottom line: Whirlybirds aren’t wrong. They’re just not always the right tool — and they’re rarely the best tool available today.

🚨 Your roof might be fine. But THIS is probably failing right now.

We do a lot of roof inspections around Houston and almost every time, the same thing shows up 90% of the time for roofs over 5 years old.

Not missing shingles. Not storm damage.

The seals around your vents, roof jacks, and flashing are cracked.
Here's what most people don't know: those rubber and caulk seals don't last as long as your roof does. Texas heat bakes them — summer after summer — until they crack, gap, and open up just enough for water to sneak in... this also causes rotted decking.

You don't notice it at first.

Then one day you've got a water stain on the ceiling, damaged insulation, or worse — mold in the attic.

And it all started with a $0 inspection and a repair that would've cost a few hundred dollars.

We're not here to sell you a new roof you don't need. If your roof is solid, we'll tell you that. But if we see cracked flashing or failing vent seals, we're going to show you — with photos — and give you options before it becomes a $10,000 interior damage claim.

A free inspection and a simple maintenance repair now can save you thousands later.

Your landscaping took years to grow. We treat it that way.

When we show up to replace your roof, we’re not just thinking about what’s above your head — we’re thinking about what’s below our feet.

Before a single shingle comes down, we lay protective tarps across your flower beds, shrubs, and lawn. Our crew is trained to work with precision — staging materials on driveways, not gardens, and walking paths intentionally so nothing gets trampled.

Because a new roof shouldn’t cost you the rose bushes you planted three years ago. 🌹

At Reign Roofing, clean job site = clean conscience. From Sugar Land to Houston and all of Texas — we protect your whole property, not just your home.

🌩️ That storm a few weeks ago? Your roof might still be dealing with it.

Hail damage doesn’t always look obvious from the ground — but up close, it shows up as dented vents, cracked shingles, bruised granules, and soft spots that lead to leaks down the road.

If you haven’t had your roof checked since that last storm, now’s the time.

Here’s what we look for on every free inspection:

🔍 Hail hits and impact bruising on shingles
🔍 Missing, cracked, or lifted shingles
🔍 Damaged flashing around vents, chimneys & skylights
🔍 Signs of active or potential leaks in the attic
🔍 Gutter damage and granule loss

We’re your local Sugar Land roofer — not a storm chaser from out of state. We’re here before the storm, after the storm, and every roof in between.
