Happy Turf Tip Friday!

We’ve had a lot of conversations this week revolving around “why my grass doesn’t look as good as it did last year?” Here are the top reasons and solutions.

1.) Drought stress. It’s pretty obvious that the entire state of SC is experiencing a significant drought. Without the proper amount of water, your turf is definitely going to suffer. Aim for 1.5-2 inches per week. Water in the mornings and until you start to see runoff.

2.) Cooler than average temperatures. Has it felt great… yes, but is it helping our grass? Nope. Until nighttime temperatures are consistently in the upper 60s and 70s, real growth and repair won’t happen. We just have to be patient here.

3.) Proper nutrition. The time has come to fertilize your grass. Do you really know what you are applying or what’s in it? Just because your neighbor uses “X” and has a “great lawn” doesn’t mean you should use it too 😀.

4.) To help overcome these frustrating factors, we went back into the fertilizer lab and created a custom blend that we think everyone will love. More on that next week!

Stay focused. Stay vigilant. And give your turf some love this week!

Regards,

Dave

Happy Turf Tip Friday!

Wahooooo. It rained! The celebration though must be momentary, as fungal pressures on our turf have increased significantly! I know yall, it is one thing after another. Patience, product, timing, and rates are the real winners here.

Chances are you have never worried about your turf developing a damaging fungus. For the most part, it’s not something we truly have to worry about.

However, with the onslaught of precipitation, humid conditions, and cooler nights… let’s talk about the biggest fungus culprit!

“Large Patch” aka Rhizoctonia solani. Note it’s not called brown patch —- that’s what those with cool season grass call it.

The solution: Big box stores carry a few products that will work at both a preventative rate as well as a curative rate —- “Scott’s Disease X” and “Bio Advanced Fungus Control”. It’s always a good idea to alternate products throughout the season. If you recognize that you have an outbreak of large patch now, apply a liquid product, as its effects will be almost immediate.

As they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Preventative rates of fungicides are typically 50% less (with regard to rates) than curative rates.

We are still booking for core aeration appointments. Reach out for a quote today!

Until next time!

Dave

Happy Turf Tip Friday!

Good cultural practices. What does that mean? Why is it important? We’ve got you 😉.

1.) Feed your turf appropriately. Most warm season grasses need anywhere between 1.5-2 lbs of nitrogen per 1000 sq/ft. (Bermuda excluded). There are dozens of calculators available online to help you with this. Our custom 20-0-10 fertilizer is rocking and rolling. $75 for a 50lb bag delivered. The absolute BEST quality available… you can’t find it locally. Link to order in the comments.

2.) Cut height and frequency. Always remove no more than 1/3 of the actual grass blade per mow. It’s not necessary to bag clippings unless you missed a mow or your phosphorus is elevated. Mow as often as your schedule allows… the more the better. Be that crazy neighbor that cuts 2-3x per week.

3.) Water. We’ve discussed it. You can control it.
Want a nice lawn? Spend the time and money ensuring your turf is hydrated.

4.) Sunlight. Remove lawn debris. Trim your shrubs and clear the tree canopy. Longer days in the future will ultimately be better for your turf.

Stay the course. Be proactive and not reactive. Growing grass is simple with the right actions.

Growing grass,

Dave

Happy Turf Tip Friday!

Watering, Part 2: Y’all are still thirsty for knowledge!

With the entire lowcountry still in a severe drought, and March being on of the driest recorded months in history, let’s get back to H2O.

1.) It’s still okay to fertilize your turf. We are still delivering our custom 20-0-10 fertilizer that is absolutely amazing. $75 for a 50lb bag delivered. Link to order is in the comments.

2.) Drought stress presents itself as a grayish color on the leaf blade. If you look closely, the leaf blades will be folded.

3.) Core aeration helps with water pe*******on and drainage. We are booking now!

4.) Google “tuna can watering method”. You will be surprised at how little water your turf is getting!

5.) Water in the morning and monitor until you start to see run off. Everyone’s yard is different, so everyone’s watering schedule will be different.

Have a great weekend,

Dave

🌿Has Spring sprung? The ups and downs with our weather has our grass confused! A few tips that won’t sway like our highs and lows:

🌱1.) It’s nitrogen time. Most warm season grasses (Bermuda excluded) need no more than 1.5 to 2lbs of nitrogen per 1000 sq/ft. Aim to accomplish this through several feedings during the growing season. ✨•We have a perfect fertilizer, available now for purchase. Our 20-0-10 is absolutely perfect. Link to order in the comments. $75 for a 50lb bag delivered.🛻

✂️2.) Cut height and frequency matter. Always take no more than 1/3 of the grass blade off per mow. The more you mow the more it grows.

☀️3.) Potassium source matters. Purchase fertilizers with Sulfate of Potassium (SOP) and NOT Muriate of Potassium (MOP). The chloride content in MOP will wreak havoc on your lawn over time.

Sit back. Relax. And welcome the growing season. We are always here to help. Aeration scheduling soon!

Dave

💧WATER💧. Arguably one of the most important elements to growing grass. Let’s talk H2O.

⏰1.) When? Watering time of day makes a huge difference. Water in the morning to maximize absorption. Don’t water in the evening —- the fungal fairy will visit you!

✨2.) How often? It’s personal preference. Deep and infrequent or frequent and shallow. Your schedule will dictate that.

📏3.) How much? Again, your grass will let you know. Enough for absorption but not too much for runoff

📣•With that being said, we are moving and grooving with our custom, 20-0-10 fertilizer. Packed with only the absolute best ingredients for warm season grasses. $75 for a 50lb bag delivered. Link to order in the comments!

Happy Turf Tip Friday!

Tips for this week are brought to you by the letter “P”. “P” stands for please don’t do this!

1.) “P”lease don’t over apply nitrogen to your centipede grass. It likes 1.5-2 lbs of nitrogen per 1000 sq/ft per growing season.

2.) “P”lease don’t treat your warm season grass like cool season grass. Centipede, for example should be granny apple smith in color. Not dark green!

3.) “P”lease don’t water in the evening. Fungal growth like large patch disease are always lurking. Water in the morning!

4.) “P”lease consider purchasing a bag of fertilizer that has been custom made to accommodate your grass. All thriller and no filler in this 20-0-10 bag. Link to order is in the comments. Seriously, it’s amazing stuff. $75 for a 50lb bag delivered locally.

On a side note, these are pictures of grass in local neighborhoods where the owners have not been following the above cultural practices.

Enjoy the beautiful weather,

Dave
