Trouble Call:
⚡️The Case of the bad Splice ⚡
​Here’s a quick look at a recent trouble call where a living room completely lost power:
• ​Checked the Basics: Breakers were sending power fine, and no GFCIs were tripped. But power was not reaching the living room.
• ​Brought Out the Tech: First used our distance-to-fault tester, which showed it was cut 70 ' away from living room.
•brought out the high-penetration wire tracer to map the circuit through the walls and down into a finished basement. You can not hide from this tool. It is capable of tracing wires even if a wall is 8' thick.
• ​Pinpointed the Break: Traced the signal to each receptacle in the room and down into the basement ceiling , covered by sheetrock and insulation. Picked up signal above a doorway in basement, tracing it towards the breaker panel. Right to the spot where the signal abruptly vanished, was the wire wrapped in electrical tape. 25 feet from the panel.
• ​The Culprit: A taped-up, poorly crimped splice that had become loose.
• ​The Fix: Cut out the bad splice, brought everything up to code with an accessible junction box, and got the power back on.
​ no unnecessary holes in the drywall.
•Improper splices like this cause high resistance, leading to dead outlets, intermittent power, or dangerous electrical arcing inside your walls and ceilings. If your outlets go dead out of nowhere, give us a call!

🚨 Safety Warning 🚨

Severe Shock and Backfeed Risk by backfeeding a breaker for a generator.

​Why Unlocked Backfeeding is Extremely Dangerous

⚡️​Lineman Safety: Connecting a generator directly to a standard breaker without a transfer mechanism sends high-voltage electricity back into the utility grid, posing a lethal threat to utility crews working on lines they assume are dead.

⚡️​Energized Receptacle (Su***de Plug): If the main breaker and a backfed generator breaker are both ON, power flows backward into the inlet box. This turns the exposed male prongs into live, deadly connection points.

⚡️​​Equipment Damage: When grid power is restored while an unisolated generator is running, the two out-of-phase power sources clash, which will instantly destroy the generator and likely trip breakers or cause an electrical fire.

An interlock kit is designed specifically to prevent the exact scenario described:
​A properly installed interlock uses a sliding mechanical plate that physically blocks the generator breaker from turning ON while the main utility breaker is ON.

​Conversely, it forces you to switch the main breaker OFF before you can slide the plate and switch the generator breaker ON.

​Manual Transfer Switch: Isolates selected critical circuits or the whole panel via a dedicated switch box.

Another panel swap out this week. Panel replacements are on the rise.
This panel was a textbook recipe for an electrical fire. Sizzling is a dead giveaway of active arcing, where electricity jumps across loose or poorly seated contacts, generating extreme heat that can easily melt the panel housing and ignite nearby combustible materials.
🚨​A few critical failure points from this swap🚨:
⚡️Over-circuiting with tandems: Putting 31 breaker handles on a panel rated for only 20 circuits bypasses the panel's design limits, leading to excess heat buildup across the busbar assembly.
⚡️Incompatible/Unlisted breakers: Breakers manufactured for other panel brands often lack proper tension on the busbar stabs. That poor connection leads to high contact resistance, arcing, pitting of the busbar, and circuit failure.
⚡️Ignoring the early warnings: Sizzling sounds, flickering lights, or dead outlets are critical active warnings, not minor inconveniences to ignore.

Another tough job today in the books—and a huge win for team persistence and technical precision! 🛠️⚡
​Recently, our team was called out to Swanton to investigate yet another broken underground line. It quickly turned into one of the most challenging locates we’ve ever faced:
• ​📍 6 feet deep
• ​📍 Enclosed in non-conductive PVC pipe
• ​📍 Zero visual damage to the outer conduit
​Standard locators struggle under conditions like these because PVC insulates the fault and eliminates a clear ground path. But giving up wasn't an option.
​Working closely with the Swanton Village Power Company and getting crucial excavation support from Menard Handyman & property maintenance Services, we pivoted our approach. We brought in a specialized tracer/distance-to-fault tester to calculate the exact signal reflection from the break.
​The result? The tester pinpointed the fault 6 feet down and precisely 31 feet out.
​We removed a small section of PVC, and right where the math said it would be—there was the break! No unnecessary trenching, minimal disruption, and job done right. 🎯
