As a licensed plumbing company, we hear it all the time:
“Your price is higher than the other guy.”
And sometimes it is.
But what many homeowners don’t realize is that when you hire a licensed and insured contractor, you’re not just paying for pipes, fittings, or a few hours of labor. You’re paying for years of training, experience, continuing education, licensing requirements, insurance, permits, code knowledge, and the peace of mind that the job is being done correctly.
Every license hanging on a wall represents countless hours of work, testing, education, and dedication to a trade. It represents a commitment to doing things safely, legally, and professionally.
Unfortunately, more and more licensed tradespeople are being compared to unlicensed individuals who often don’t carry insurance, don’t pull permits, and don’t have the same accountability when something goes wrong.
The problem isn’t just that it hurts legitimate businesses—it hurts homeowners too.
When a plumbing, gas, sewer, or water service job fails, leaks, causes damage, or creates a safety issue, who stands behind the work? Who has the insurance? Who has the licensing board holding them accountable? Who has the expertise to correct the issue properly?
The answer matters.
We understand everyone wants to save money. We do too. But the cheapest price is not always the best value.
The trades are built on knowledge, skill, experience, and responsibility. When licensed professionals are continually undercut by unlicensed work, it diminishes the value of the trade and the years of dedication that true professionals invest into mastering their craft.
