Watts Tree Experts is locally owned and family operated, and that's more than a line on our website. When the company carries your family's name, every yard, driveway, and farm lane we work on becomes a reflection of it.

That shows up in the small things. Our crews treat each property the way they'd want their own treated, take time to answer questions, and don't leave until the job is done right. Mulch heaped high against tree trunks across Frederick County lawns can slowly rot bark and weaken trees.

Bark is meant to stay dry. Mulch piled against the trunk holds moisture there, softening bark and inviting rot, fungal disease, and damage from voles and mice that nest in the pile over winter. Deep mulch can also draw roots upward to circle the trunk, where they may eventually girdle the tree.

Proper mulching keeps the root flare visible, where the trunk widens as it meets the ground. Two to four inches of mulch spread in a wide, donut-shaped ring, with a few inches of open space around the trunk, protects roots without trapping moisture against the bark. Fall is a good time to correct mulch volcanoes, before rodents settle into the piles for winter.

If you have hemlocks near Thurmont, Emmitsburg, or the Catoctin foothills, check the underside of their branches for tiny white tufts at the needle bases. These are signs of the hemlock woolly adelgid, an invasive pest harming hemlocks across Maryland.

The adelgid is dormant in summer, becoming active in fall when its woolly coverings become noticeable. It feeds on the tree's nutrients, leading to thinning foliage and loss of color over time.

Early detection allows for treatment by a licensed applicator. Once a tree has lost most foliage, it may be too late for rescue. Identifying your hemlock's condition is crucial.

Good morning, Frederick! Drive any back road between Thurmont and Frederick and you'll see it: fence rows and field edges that have slowly grown into thickets of black locust, cedar, multiflora rose, and tree of heaven. Every year those edges creep a little farther into usable ground.

Our land clearing service is built for exactly that. Fall and winter storms in Frederick County can bring down a tree in seconds, and it always seems to land across the one driveway or lane you need to get out. Here's how our storm cleanup service works when that happens.

Safety comes first. If any lines are involved, the utility company has to clear them before anyone touches the tree, so stay well back and report it to them right away. Once it's safe, our crew sizes up how the tree is loaded. A fallen trunk can be twisted, pinned, or under tension, and cutting in the wrong spot can make it roll or spring back.

From there we open up access first, cutting a path so you can get vehicles in and out, then work through the rest of the tree, the hanging limbs, and any damaged trees nearby that could come down next. Our operators handle the heavy wood, and we clean up the brush and debris so the property is back to normal, not just passable.
