People often ask where I'd spend extra money when building a home.
My answer isn't countertops, appliances, or fancy finishes.
It's:
✔️ An encapsulated crawl space
✔️ Better insulation
✔️ Energy-efficient windows
None of these are the most exciting parts of a home build.
But they're some of the few upgrades you'll benefit from every single day. A more comfortable home, a more efficient HVAC system, and lower utility bills over the life of the house.
The best upgrades aren't always the ones people notice during a walkthrough.
They're the ones that keep working for you long after move-in day.

Not Every “Custom Home” Is Actually Custom�“Custom” has become one of the most overused words in home building.
A lot of homes today are really modified production homes with limited layouts and preset options. And there’s nothing wrong with that… unless you thought you were getting something designed around YOU.
True custom starts with understanding how a family actually lives:�-how you cook�-how you gather�-how your mornings flow�-what frustrates you in your current home�-and the little details that make everyday life better
That’s the difference between choosing from a package… and building a home around real people.
Comment “CUSTOM” if you think homes today are starting to feel too cookie cutter.

Not all homes are built the same

Two homes can look almost identical on the surface…
But what’s behind the walls can be very different.
Framing spacing, insulation type, window quality, even subfloor thickness… all of it plays a role in how a home feels and performs over time.
For example…
16” on center framing vs 24” can create a stronger, more solid structure.
Upgraded insulation can improve comfort, efficiency, and sound.
Higher-quality windows can reduce noise and energy loss.
And better subfloor systems can prevent movement and squeaks over time.
None of this is about right or wrong…
It’s about understanding the differences so you can decide what matters most to you.

Here’s what most people don’t realize about historic homes…
They’re usually allowed to exist as-is, even if they don’t meet today’s standards.
But once you start remodeling… especially opening walls or changing systems… you can trigger requirements to bring those areas up to current code.
Not always the whole house. But the part you’re working on has to be done right.
That’s how a $15,000 project can turn into $40,000 to $50,000… fast.
Not a bad thing… just something you want to understand going in.

Barndominiums are not as simple as the internet makes them look 👀
In Madison County, you can’t just throw up a pole barn and turn it into a house later.
It has to meet residential code from the beginning… which changes the entire build.
I’ve seen people go down this path thinking they found a “shortcut”… and it ends up costing more time and money.
